Today we are going to learn four common Italian expressions: mi tocca, mi secca, mi preme, mi rincresce. Listen to the correct pronunciation.
Tocca a me, a te…

Mi tocca, ti tocca…
Tocca a me (or a te, a lui…) means “It’s my turn”.
Mi tocca (fare qualcosa) implies that I have to do something but I’m not that enthusiastic about it.
- Stasera tocca a me lavare i piatti (it’s my turn).
- Stasera mi tocca lavare i piatti (and I’d rather do something else).
- Hai perso la scommessa, ti tocca pagarmi una cena.
- Abbiamo fatto una proposta, tocca a voi decidere.
Mi secca
Seccare, to dry, is a verb we can use as infastidire, to bother, with an idiomatic nuance. Mi secca means it bothers me. A seccatore or seccatrice is an annoying person, a nuisance. It’s rather informal spoken Italian.
- Sono senza macchina. Ti secca portarmi a casa?
- Non vado mai da Starbucks. Mi secca pagare tanto per un caffè mediocre.
- Sbrigati, mi seccherebbe arrivare in ritardo all’appuntamento.
- Non dare retta a Claudio, è solo un seccatore.
Mi preme
Premere (pron. prèmere), means to push or press. As a set phrase, mi preme means that I care, I feel obliged to do something. The noun premura could mean “care”, thoughtfulness but also “urgency”. Premuroso as an adjective means caring, considerate. They are all rather formal.
- Mi preme dire che quest’anno le tasse non aumenteranno.
- Ci preme sottolineare che le iscrizioni al corso di italiano chiudono oggi.
- Il dottore ha avuto la premura di telefonarmi per farmi gli auguri.
- Sei fortunata ad avere un marito tanto premuroso.
Mi rincresce
It’s a very formal way to say that “I’m terribly sorry” or to ask “do you mind if…”?
- Mi rincresce che dobbiate tornare a casa così presto.
- Ci rincresce informarla che dovremo cancellare il suo contratto.
- Mi scusi, le rincresce fare meno rumore?
- Vi rincresce se chiudo la finestra?
