What italian essay fronting is
Open any chapter of a thesis defended at the Università di Pisa, any article in a journal of historical studies, any report drafted by a public administration in Volterra, and you will find italian essay fronting in the first lines of almost every paragraph. The pattern is simple. A noun phrase, sometimes a short phrase, is placed at the head of the sentence and isolated by a comma; the verb of the main clause arrives only afterwards, and the comment that follows must stand as a fully grammatical sentence in its own right.

The italian essay fronting move serves two readers at once: the writer, who signals what the next paragraph is about; and the reader, who can scan the openings of paragraphs and reconstruct the argument’s skeleton. This is one reason the construction is so frequent in academic prose, official correspondence, journalism of analysis (not news), and the kind of long-form essay collected in volumes by Adelphi or il Mulino. Spoken Italian uses fronting too, but with very different rules, as we will see further down.
The seven openers, sorted by register
Italian essay fronting is not a single phrase but a small family. The seven openers below cover almost every formal-register need; the difference between them is mostly register and grammatical fit, not meaning. They are sorted from neutral-formal to high-formal.
- Quanto a + noun. The workhorse. Neutral-formal, works in any kind of essay. Quanto al capitolo conclusivo, lo riscriverò dopo aver discusso con il professor Ricci.
- Per quanto riguarda + noun. The most common opener in academic and administrative prose. Slightly heavier than quanto a. Per quanto riguarda la diffusione europea del manufatto volterrano, la rotta Livorno-Marsiglia resta centrale.
- Per quel che riguarda + noun. Variant of the previous, marginally lighter, frequent in narrative essays. Per quel che riguarda le immagini, ho chiesto al fotografo del museo di rifare quattro scatti.
- Riguardo a + noun. Concise, ideal for letters and shorter reports. Riguardo ai contratti di apprendistato, va segnalato che molti scompaiono dopo l’Unità d’Italia.
- Circa + noun. Short, elegant, slightly literary; do not confuse with the approximative circa (“about” with numbers). Circa l’ipotesi di un’origine etrusca della lavorazione, le evidenze archeologiche non sono concordi.
- In merito a + noun. Bureaucratic and institutional. Frequent in legal texts and academic peer review. In merito alla questione attributiva, mi pare prematuro pronunciarsi prima di aver visto la patente di mestiere.
- Per quanto concerne / relativamente a + noun. The highest formal register. Reserved for academic articles, ministerial communications, and long-form essays. Per quanto concerne la metodologia, ho seguito l’impostazione comparativa già adottata nella mia tesi triennale.
A practical principle: pick two or three of these openers and rotate them within a chapter. A page that opens every paragraph with per quanto riguarda reads as machine-generated; a page that alternates quanto a, circa, and per quel che riguarda reads as written by a person who can hear the rhythm of the prose. Italian essay fronting works through variety, not through repetition.
🔍 Register memo. If you would not say it out loud to a friend at a café, italian essay fronting is the right place for it. In merito a, per quanto concerne, and relativamente a belong to documents, not conversation. Quanto a and circa are formal but still readable.
No echo pronoun: the C1 rule
This is the single feature that separates italian essay fronting from the spoken fronting you may have practised at B1. In the spoken pattern, the fronted noun must be recalled later by a small atom inside the sentence: il caffè, lo prendo io contains an obligatory lo. In italian essay fronting, that small atom is absent. The opener (quanto a + noun, per quanto riguarda + noun) sets the topic, and the clause that follows treats the topic implicitly, without referring back to it.
- ✓ Quanto al capitolo conclusivo, lo riscriverò dopo aver discusso con il professor Ricci. Here lo is part of the verb riscriverò‘s own object, not an echo of the topic. The fronted phrase quanto al capitolo conclusivo simply sets the scene; the comment lo riscriverò happens to need its own direct object pronoun.
- ✓ Per quel che riguarda la documentazione d’archivio, abbiamo consultato i registri della Biblioteca Guarnacci. No pronoun refers back to la documentazione; the clause is free-standing.
- ✗ Per quanto riguarda la bibliografia, la ho ancora da completare. Wrong style. The echoing la drags the sentence into spoken register. Rewrite: Per quanto riguarda la bibliografia, ho ancora qualche titolo da inserire.
The rule generalises: when you front a topic with one of the seven openers, the comment must stand on its own grammatical feet. If your continuation contains a attached pronoun pointing back to the fronted phrase, you are writing spoken Italian dressed in a formal hat, and a careful reader will hear the seam. The italian essay fronting structure works precisely because the topic is “hanging” outside the syntax of the comment, not stitched into it.
The Di X parleremo frame
A sub-pattern of italian essay fronting uses a prepositional phrase with di, sul, or sulla at the head, followed by a verb of discussion, treatment, or analysis. This is the frame writers use to announce what comes next, or to remind the reader of what has just been said.
- Di questo argomento parleremo nel prossimo capitolo, dove il quadro istituzionale risulterà più chiaro.
- Sul ruolo della corporazione cinquecentesca, le fonti tornano a essere generose.
- Della distinzione fra alabastro gessoso e calcareo, si è già detto abbastanza nel paragrafo precedente.
- A questa ipotesi, è dedicata l’intera appendice in fondo al volume.
Notice the verbs that pair naturally with this frame: parlare, discutere, trattare, dire, occuparsi, dedicarsi, tornare, rimandare, fare cenno. The frame can run in the future (announcement) or in the past (recapitulation), and it is one of the most efficient ways to braid the paragraphs of a long chapter together. In italian essay fronting, this is the meta-discursive opener: a sentence about what the text itself is doing.

Comma or colon? Punctuation rules
The default punctuation after the fronted phrase is the comma. Italian essay fronting in its standard form requires a single comma between the opener and the following clause: Quanto a Marcello, è da settimane che insiste sulla necessità di un sopralluogo a Castellina Marittima.
The colon enters the picture in two specific situations. First, when the comment is itself long and contains internal commas, so that a comma after the opener would be visually lost; the colon then signals a stronger pause. Second, when the comment is structured as a list, an enumeration, or a quotation. In both cases the colon carries the same logical work as the comma: marking the boundary between the fronted topic and the comment that explains it.
- Comma (default): Quanto alla scadenza, la commissione ha confermato la data della discussione.
- Colon (long, comma-heavy comment): Per quanto riguarda gli archivi consultati: la Biblioteca Guarnacci, l’Archivio di Stato di Pisa, l’Archivio storico comunale di Volterra, e il fondo Camera di commercio di Livorno.
- Colon (announcing a list): Circa le fonti iconografiche: incisioni settecentesche, fotografie del Touring Club di inizio Novecento, schede catalografiche del museo.
One thing the colon must not do: replace the comma when the comment is a single, ordinary clause. Quanto al capitolo conclusivo: lo riscriverò is awkward; the colon there has no logical work to do. Reserve the colon for the two situations above and italian essay fronting will read cleanly. Essay fronting vs spoken fronting
Italian has two very different fronting families, and confusing them is the surest way to sound out of register. The spoken family is the one you learn at B1: un caffè lo prenderei, il giornale lo leggo io, a Firenze ci vado spesso. The opener is bare (no preposition), the topic re-enters the sentence as a small pronoun (lo, la, ci), and the whole structure belongs to spoken language and informal writing.
Italian essay fronting is the formal-writing family. The opener is a preposition or a fixed locution (quanto a, per quanto riguarda, circa, riguardo a, in merito a, relativamente a, per quanto concerne); the topic is not echoed by any pronoun in the comment; the punctuation is a comma, sometimes a colon. The comparison table below makes the difference visible at a glance.

The two patterns can even sit next to each other in the same writer’s repertoire: an academic in Volterra will use italian essay fronting in her thesis and spoken fronting when she calls her supervisor on the phone to discuss it. The skill at C1 is not choosing one and abandoning the other; it is choosing the right one for the channel, and not bleeding pronouns from one register into the other.
Building a paragraph with italian essay fronting
The construction does its best work over a stretch of three or four sentences. A paragraph in a thesis chapter, in an editorial, in a research report, typically opens with italian essay fronting, develops the topic for two or three lines, and closes with a forward-looking Di X parleremo… sentence pointing to what comes next. Here is a worked example, drawn from the alabaster historiography Sofia is editing.
Quanto alla cronologia delle botteghe ottocentesche, la storiografia tradizionale ha individuato tre fasi: l’esordio post-napoleonico, l’espansione di metà secolo, la specializzazione tardo-ottocentesca. Per quel che riguarda la prima fase, i registri della Biblioteca Guarnacci offrono pochi nomi e ancor meno dati di produzione. In merito alla seconda, la documentazione si fa improvvisamente abbondante, e consente di seguire l’apertura di laboratori secondari fuori Volterra. Della terza fase parleremo nel paragrafo seguente, dove emergerà il ruolo decisivo della prima Esposizione universale di Parigi.
Read it twice. The reader knows, after the first four words of each sentence, which sub-topic is about to be treated. The paragraph has visible joints, and the joints are italian essay fronting openers. None of the comments contains an echo pronoun, because none is needed: the topic is hanging at the head, and the comment treats it directly without referring back to it. This is the kind of prose that earns a positive judgment in a CILS C1 written test and in any university seminar paper.

Three traps to avoid
Three slips flag italian essay fronting as written by a learner. Each takes thirty seconds to fix once you know what to look for.
Trap 1. Sneaking an echo pronoun into the comment. Wrong: Per quanto riguarda la tesi, la sto ancora scrivendo. Correct: Per quanto riguarda la tesi, sono ancora in fase di stesura. The echo pronoun belongs to spoken fronting, not to italian essay fronting.
Trap 2. Starting every paragraph with the same opener. A page where six paragraphs in a row open with per quanto riguarda reads as bureaucratic copy-paste. Rotate: italian essay fronting works through variety. Two or three openers per page, alternated, is the right amount.
Trap 3. Mixing per quanto mi riguarda with the essay-fronting openers. Per quanto mi riguarda means “as far as I am concerned”, a personal-stance phrase belonging to opinion-writing, not to italian essay fronting. If you mean “regarding the question of X”, use per quanto riguarda la questione di X, not per quanto mi riguarda. The two phrases look similar and do very different jobs.

Nine sentences, nine different ways into the topic, and not a single echo pronoun in any of the comments. This is what italian essay fronting sounds like when a writer who reads thinks aloud with another writer who reads.

Can I start every paragraph with per quanto riguarda?
Technically yes, stylistically no. A page where six paragraphs in a row open with per quanto riguarda reads as machine-generated. Does the fronted phrase need to be repeated as a pronoun later in the sentence?

Why does circa work both as approximately (with numbers) and as regarding (with topics)?
Latin circa meant around, in the spatial and the figurative sense. Italian preserves both readings. With a numeral it means approximately (circa cento studenti = about a hundred students); with a topic noun it means regarding (circa l’ipotesi etrusca = regarding the Etruscan hypothesis). The position in the sentence and the type of noun disambiguate: italian essay fronting uses circa only at the head of the sentence, followed by a topic noun and a comma, never with a numeral.
