This is the contrast that earns italian dalla parte di its B2 status. Italian dalla parte di places you on a side. Da parte di identifies a sender, an agent, or the source of a message or feeling. They look almost the same, but they do opposite work, and Italians never mix italian dalla parte di with its lookalike.

When Italians explain a relative, they often clarify which family branch the person belongs to. The neutral standard form is da parte di: uno zio da parte di madre, “an uncle on my mother’s side”.
