For this exercise, I am assuming you are already familiar with the passato prossimo regolare. We have a lot of articles here related to this topic. In a nutshell…
It describes a complete action in the past. The passato prossimo regolare is the combination of essere and avere + past participle (ato-uto-ito):
Rule of thumb:
If the verb can have an object (answers the question “cosa? – what?” = il minestrone) you have to use avere, otherwise go with essere. With essere, the participle changes according to the number/gender of the subject: Mario è andato, Laura è andata.
