The construction makes it clear that the speaker has not chosen the reaction; it has welled up. First, the past participle in compound tenses agrees with the subject, not with anything else, because <em>venire<\/em> is intransitive here: <em>le \u00e8 venuta voglia<\/em>, <em>mi \u00e8 venuto da pensare<\/em> (the implicit subject is the impulse itself, masculine singular, hence <em>venuto<\/em>). Second, the construction admits negation in a slightly idiomatic way: <em>non mi viene da rispondere<\/em> means &#8220;I don&#8217;t even feel like answering&#8221;, a more eloquent dismissal than <em>non voglio rispondere<\/em>. Here <em>venire<\/em> is a full motion verb with a normal subject (the idea, the doubts), so agreement follows the normal rules of <em>essere<\/em>-verbs. This is the crucial difference from <em>mi venne fatto di + infinito<\/em>, where <em>fatto<\/em> stays invariable. The agent can be expressed with <em>da<\/em>, exactly as with <em>essere<\/em>: <em>il documento viene firmato dal sindaco<\/em>. The participle agrees with the subject in gender and number, again like <em>essere<\/em>: <em>le foto vengono esposte<\/em>, <em>i moduli vengono inviati<\/em>. Where the two auxiliaries part company is in the meaning each highlights: <em>essere<\/em> can host either reading, <em>venire<\/em> selects only the eventive one. Memoir, lyric prose, philosophical essay all benefit from <em>venire<\/em>: the writer becomes a witness rather than an instigator. Technical or instructional prose tends to use <em>fare<\/em>, or active sentences, because the writer is in charge. Both are correct.
