The doubled verb sketches a scene: Antonella was already on her feet, hurrying, and that hurrying is the backdrop against which the main action (consegn\u00f2) happens. English would reach for &#8220;in a rush&#8221;, &#8220;running flat out&#8221;, or a participle like &#8220;rushing&#8221;. Italian compresses all of that into two repeated words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The form is small, very expressive, and very productive. It works with many action verbs, especially verbs of motion and effort: <em>cammina cammina<\/em>, <em>scava scava<\/em>, <em>cerca cerca<\/em>, <em>lavora lavora<\/em>, <em>spingi spingi<\/em>, <em>aspetta aspetta<\/em>. Take the <em>tu<\/em> imperative of an action verb, repeat it, drop it at the very start of the sentence with a comma, and continue with whatever happened next. The verb is always the <em>tu<\/em> imperative, never the <em>io<\/em>, <em>noi<\/em>, or <em>voi<\/em> form. The second person singular is what carries the adverbial sense, historically because the storyteller addressed the listener, &#8220;you walk, you walk along with me&#8221;. Context decides. The good news is that English speakers do not need to pick the right shade consciously: native Italians read the meaning from the verb and the surrounding sentence without thinking about it, and so will you, with exposure. The same goes for <em>nasci nasci<\/em> (being born happens once), <em>muori muori<\/em>, <em>esplodi esplodi<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Natural: cammina cammina, corri corri, cerca cerca, lavora lavora, scava scava, pensa pensa, rifletti rifletti, tira tira, spingi spingi, prova prova, aspetta aspetta, insisti insisti, pulisci pulisci, stira stira.<\/li>\n<li>Odd or impossible: nasci nasci, muori muori, esplodi esplodi, sii sii, arriva arriva, parti parti.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are unsure whether a verb works, ask yourself: can you imagine the action stretched across many minutes or hours? If yes, the doubled form is probably fine. If the action happens in a single instant, leave it alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vs-other-options\">Italian corri corri vs di corsa, in fretta, a forza di<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian has at least three other ways to express the same ideas behind Italian corri corri. They are not identical, and a native speaker switches between them depending on register, rhythm, and intention. Used when the writer or speaker wants colour, rhythm, a fairy-tale feel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian corri corri is the most marked of the four options for hurry and effort. A weather report says <em>di corsa<\/em>; a grandmother telling her grandson about how she found a long-lost letter says <em>cerca cerca<\/em>. Reach for Italian corri corri or its siblings when you want flavour. Use <em>di corsa<\/em> or <em>in fretta<\/em> when you want a neutral sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"register\">Register: where you actually hear it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian corri corri belongs to narrative speech and writing.
