Notice the participle of <em>parere<\/em>: <em>parso<\/em>, irregular and worth memorising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"adjective\">Pattern 1: sembra strano, sembra interessante<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lightest use of <em>italian sembrare parere<\/em> needs no subordinate clause at all: just <em>sembra<\/em> plus an adjective, often preceded by a dativo pronoun for the person whose impression it is. First, the adjective agrees with the real-world subject: <em>Tiziana sembra stanca<\/em> (feminine singular), <em>i clienti sembrano contenti<\/em> (masculine plural). Second, the dativo pronoun (<em>mi, ti, le, gli, ci, vi, loro<\/em>) is optional but very common; it tells you whose impression we are talking about. The dativo <em>mi, ti, le, gli<\/em> is optional and tells you whose impression it is, exactly like in pattern 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same family of impression-and-opinion verbs that triggers the subjunctive includes <em>credere che<\/em>, <em>pensare che<\/em>, <em>immaginare che<\/em>; <em>italian sembrare parere<\/em> sit at the heart of this group. The trick is the link between the dativo and the implied subject of the infinitive: if they are the same person, italian sembrare parere prefer the <em>di + infinito<\/em> form. If they are different people, the language jumps back to <em>che + congiuntivo<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The infinitive after <em>di<\/em> can be simple (<em>di stare<\/em>, <em>di capire<\/em>) for a present impression, or compound (<em>di aver visto<\/em>, <em>di aver chiuso<\/em>, <em>di essere arrivata<\/em>) for something already done. The compound form is the workhorse for sentences like &#8220;I think I already did this&#8221;. A woman would say <em>mi sembra di essere stata chiara<\/em>; a man <em>mi sembra di essere stato chiaro<\/em>: the past participle of <em>essere<\/em> agrees with the speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"parere\">Parere: the close cousin of sembrare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything said about <em>sembrare<\/em> applies to <em>parere<\/em> as well. The first and second persons of <em>parere<\/em> exist in the textbook, but a native rarely reaches for them. Stick to the impersonal forms and you cover real conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pare-di-si\">The everyday answers: mi pare di s\u00ec, mi pare di no<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you learn just one fixed expression with italian sembrare parere, make it this one. <em>Mi pare di s\u00ec<\/em> means &#8220;I think so&#8221; and <em>mi pare di no<\/em> means &#8220;I don&#8217;t think so&#8221;, both with a polite hedge built in: the speaker is reporting an impression, not a certainty. The full version would be <em>mi pare di esserlo<\/em>, &#8220;I think it is so&#8221;, but Italians collapse it to <em>mi pare di s\u00ec<\/em>.
