It is so common that Italians sometimes use it without specifying: <em>la cosa sta prendendo una piega<\/em> by itself, with falling intonation, almost always means a bad turn. This is one of those idioms where word-by-word translation is misleading. Italians use <em>meno male<\/em> dozens of times a day; it is the everyday equivalent of English &#8220;phew&#8221; or &#8220;luckily&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mistakes\">Three mistakes English speakers make<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three slips with italian in meglio flag a sentence as written by a learner of italian in meglio.
