The textbook rule that you build adverbs by sticking -mente on a feminine adjective covers maybe half of what Italians actually say. The other half comes from three patterns: prepositional phrases (preposition + noun or preposition + adjective), adjectives used directly as adverbs (parla chiaro, vola basso), and the productive frame in maniera / in modo + adjective. This B1 guide shows when each pattern wins, why Italians prefer in fretta to frettolosamente in everyday speech, and how to avoid the most common slips.

Get this right and your italian adverbs without mente will start sounding less like a textbook and more like the conversation at a Foggia fish market on a Saturday morning.

Cosa impareremo oggi

👆🏻 Jump to section

Why -mente is only half the story

The in + noun family: in fretta, in giro, in piedi

The di + noun family: di solito, di rado, di nuovo

The alla + feminine adjective family: alla svelta, alla buona

The a + noun family: a piedi, a memoria, a malapena

The con + noun family: con calma, con piacere

Bare adjectives as adverbs: parla chiaro, va piano

The productive frame: in maniera / in modo + adjective

All’improvviso and the time-onset phrases

Why Italians often skip -mente in speech

Cheat sheet

Dialogue at the Foggia fish market

Mini-challenge

Frequently asked questions

Related guides

Quiz

Why -mente is only half the story

Open any A2 textbook and the recipe for italian adverbs without mente looks straightforward, even though italian adverbs without mente are rarely the focus there. Take the feminine form of an adjective, slap on -mente, and you have an adverb: lenta becomes lentamente, rapida becomes rapidamente, chiara becomes chiaramente. Easy. But step into a market in Foggia or eavesdrop on two friends arguing about a recipe, and a strange thing happens: the -mente forms almost disappear. Real Italian runs on shorter, punchier substitutes.

Where a textbook predicts rapidamente, a native uses the italian adverbs without mente form in fretta. Where a textbook predicts raramente, a native uses di rado. Where a textbook predicts improvvisamente, a native uses all’improvviso. Where a textbook predicts chiaramente, a native might just say parla chiaro and leave it at that. None of these italian adverbs without mente is informal slang. They belong to the standard, written and spoken, and many of them are documented on the Accademia della Crusca website as the natural form for everyday use.

So the goal of this italian adverbs without mente guide is not to replace -mente but to add the other half of the toolbox: the prepositional phrases (in, di, a, alla, con + noun or adjective), the bare adjectives that double as adverbs, and the productive frame in maniera / in modo + adjective that lets you build new ones on the fly. By the end you will know not just how to form each kind of italian adverbs without mente, but when each one beats its -mente cousin in a real conversation.

The in + noun family: in fretta, in giro, in piedi

The most common ready-made italian adverbs without mente are built with in + noun. This is the workhorse pattern of italian adverbs without mente. They cover speed, position, direction, and condition, and most have no real -mente equivalent. The classic of the group is in fretta, which is the everyday Italian for “in a hurry”. You can also hear di fretta: the Accademia della Crusca treats the two as largely interchangeable with verbs of movement (uscire in fretta or uscire di fretta), with a small register shift in some contexts.

Stamattina mi sono asciugata i capelli in fretta perché ero in ritardo.

Penelope esce di casa in fretta e si dimentica sempre il telefono.

Adriano è in giro per Foggia a comprare il pesce per la cena.

Sono rimasta in piedi due ore al concerto.

Mi sono svegliata in ritardo e ho perso l’autobus.

Andiamo in centro a piedi, fa una bella giornata.

I bambini giocavano in cerchio nel cortile della scuola.

Camilla parla in pubblico senza nessuna paura.

Abbiamo finito il lavoro in tempo per la consegna di venerdì.

Notice the range of meanings these italian adverbs without mente cover. In fretta is manner (“hurriedly”), in giro is location plus movement (“around”), in piedi is posture (“standing”), in ritardo is time (“late”), in tempo is also time (“on time”), in pubblico is setting (“in public”). All of them act exactly like adverbs in the sentence: they modify the verb, they don’t change form, and they answer questions like “how?”, “when?”, “where?”. You can build a remarkable amount of Italian using these italian adverbs without mente alone, never reaching for the -mente suffix.

The di + noun family: di solito, di rado, di nuovo

The di + noun family of italian adverbs without mente covers frequency, manner, and certainty. Di solito is the everyday word for “usually” and it is far more frequent in conversation than solitamente (which exists but sounds slightly more written). Di rado means “rarely” and competes with raramente in the same way: both are correct, but di rado has the friendlier ring. Di nuovo is the standard way to say “again”, with no real one-word equivalent.

One sub-pattern worth singling out is di + di, where the noun is repeated to form a frequency phrase: di tanto in tanto (“from time to time”), di giorno in giorno (“day by day”), di volta in volta (“case by case”), di male in peggio (“from bad to worse”). This is one of Italian’s signature rhythms inside the broader family of italian adverbs without mente, an old structure documented in Treccani that gives speech a musical feel. Compare occasionalmente with di tanto in tanto: same meaning, but the second one breathes.

🎯 Mini-task: Replace each -mente adverb with the more natural italian adverbs without mente from the in/di family.

Solitamente faccio la spesa al mercato il sabato.

Penelope esce frettolosamente di casa.

Raramente vado al ristorante la sera.

Adriano arriva sempre ritardatamente alle riunioni.

Devo chiamarti nuovamente, ho perso la linea.

Occasionalmente prendo il treno per Bari.

<details>
👉 Show answers

1. Di solito faccio la spesa al mercato il sabato.

2. The full underlying form is alla maniera + adjective (“in the X way”), but Italian drops maniera and leaves just the article and the feminine adjective. The result feels idiomatic, often a little colloquial, sometimes slightly playful. Alla svelta is “quickly”, a cousin of in fretta with a sharper, more impatient flavour. Alla buona is “casually, without fuss”, the perfect word for a Sunday lunch with friends where nobody bothered to set the good plates.

Two sub-groups are worth knowing. The first describes a style or a national habit: alla francese, alla romana, alla napoletana, alla pugliese, alla milanese. You will see them all over Italian menus (cotoletta alla milanese, risotto allo zafferano, caffè alla napoletana). The second describes a manner or quality, often informal: alla buona, alla svelta, alla meglio, alla peggio, alla cieca, alla rinfusa (“higgledy-piggledy”). The frame is so productive that Italians coin new ones routinely: alla nonna, alla mamma, alla vecchia maniera.

The a + noun family: a piedi, a memoria, a malapena

The a + noun family is another rich source of italian adverbs without mente, perhaps the most idiomatic group of italian adverbs without mente in the whole catalogue. It covers means, manner, and degree. A piedi is “on foot”, a memoria is “by heart”, a malapena is “barely”, a stento is “with difficulty”, a caso is “at random”. Most of these have no clean -mente equivalent in modern Italian. You either say a memoria or you find a wordy paraphrase.

There is also a small group with a doubled noun: a poco a poco (“little by little”), a mano a mano (“gradually”), a faccia a faccia (“face to face”), a corpo a corpo (“hand to hand”). Treccani notes that some of these can drop the first a: you will hear both a faccia a faccia and faccia a faccia. The doubled-noun rhythm is one of the unmistakable signatures of spoken Italian and of italian adverbs without mente in particular.

The con + noun family: con calma, con piacere

The con + noun branch of italian adverbs without mente is the cousin English speakers will recognise immediately, because English uses the same structure: “with care”, “with patience”, “with joy”. Italian leans on it even more heavily. Where English would often default to “carefully” or “patiently”, Italian frequently prefers con cura or con pazienza. The pattern is freely productive: take an abstract noun describing a quality, put con in front, and you have an adverbial expression.

One subtle difference from English: con + noun in Italian often sounds slightly warmer or more emphatic than the equivalent -mente adverb. Ha risposto con freddezza is more vivid than ha risposto freddamente; both are correct, but the prepositional phrase puts a spotlight on the quality. This is why so many polite formulas use the structure: con piacere, con permesso, con rispetto, con il dovuto rispetto. They are not just italian adverbs without mente, they are small ceremonies.

Bare adjectives as adverbs: parla chiaro, va piano

A small but very lively group of italian adverbs without mente uses adjectives directly, without any preposition. The most famous are parla chiaro (“speak clearly, speak frankly”), va piano (“go slowly”), canta forte (“sing loudly”), vola basso (“fly low”), tira dritto (“go straight”). The proverb chi va piano va sano e va lontano (“slow and steady wins the race”) packages three of these italian adverbs without mente into a single line.

One thing that surprises learners: in some of these expressions the adjective agrees with the subject in gender and number, rather than staying frozen. Compare Camminava leggero come un gatto (he, masculine singular) with Le mani di Fila si muovono goffe e rapide (the hands, feminine plural). When the adjective is both modifying the action and describing the subject, Italian lets it agree. In the most fixed expressions (parla chiaro, va piano, vola basso), the adjective is frozen as masculine singular and never agrees. The rule of thumb: if the expression has hardened into an idiom (you would feel weird saying parla chiara to a woman), leave it singular masculine; otherwise let it agree.

The productive frame: in maniera / in modo + adjective

When no ready-made phrase fits and you want to keep building italian adverbs without mente on the fly, Italian offers a wonderfully productive frame: in maniera + feminine adjective or in modo + masculine adjective. The two forms mean the same thing and are largely interchangeable. In maniera elegante equals in modo elegante equals elegantemente. The frame works with virtually any descriptive adjective, which makes it a lifesaver when you cannot remember a specific -mente form or when the adverb you need sounds clunky.

Penelope mi ha guardato in maniera strana quando ho ordinato il pesce crudo.

Adriano ha risposto in modo gentile anche se la domanda era scortese.

Il professore spiega le cose in maniera molto chiara.

Hanno reagito in modo strano alla notizia.

Camilla scrive in maniera precisa, senza mai una sbavatura.

Il bambino si è comportato in modo educato tutto il pomeriggio.

La pasticceria espone i dolci in maniera invitante in vetrina.

There is one nuance worth knowing. Sometimes in maniera + adjective and the matching -mente adverb carry slightly different shades. Mangiò in maniera molto rapida can suggest physical haste, even rudeness (“he wolfed it down”), while mangiò molto rapidamente simply says it took little time. The prepositional version puts the manner on stage; the suffix version reports a fact. This split is not absolute, but in careful writing you can use it to add precision to your italian adverbs without mente.

All’improvviso and the time-onset phrases

A small but very useful subgroup of italian adverbs without mente describes sudden events or moments of onset: all’improvviso (“suddenly”), di colpo (“all at once”), di botto (“with a thud, abruptly”), a un tratto (“at one point”), tutto a un tratto (“all of a sudden”), su due piedi (“on the spot, without thinking”). They are mostly built on the a/di + noun frame and they all have -mente equivalents like improvvisamente or subitamente, but in narrative and conversation the prepositional forms win every time.

All’improvviso il cane è uscito fuori dalla cuccia abbaiando.

Adriano si è alzato di colpo dal tavolo e ha lasciato la stanza.

Penelope ha smesso di parlare di botto quando è entrato il direttore.

A un tratto la luce è andata via in tutto il quartiere.

Non posso decidere su due piedi, ho bisogno di pensarci.

Tutto a un tratto il mercato si è riempito di gente.

Margherita ha cambiato lavoro da un giorno all’altro, senza preavviso.

These phrases love the imperfect or the passato prossimo of narrative Italian. Open any short story and you will find these italian adverbs without mente in the first paragraph: they are how Italian signals a turn in the action. Learning to use all’improvviso, di colpo, and a un tratto instead of improvvisamente is one of the fastest ways to make your written Italian sound less translated and more native.

Why Italians often skip -mente in speech

Three reasons explain the preference for italian adverbs without mente over the long suffix forms in real conversation. First, rhythm: italian adverbs without mente like in fretta are two syllables, frettolosamente is six. Italian loves short words at the end of a phrase; long -mente adverbs slow the sentence down. Second, register: many -mente forms feel slightly formal or written, like solitamente or raramente, while their italian adverbs without mente cousins (di solito, di rado) belong squarely to everyday speech. Third, history: many of these italian adverbs without mente are older than the modern -mente habit and have stayed in the language as fixed expressions.

This does not mean you should avoid -mente. It is the right choice in a great many contexts: writing, formal speech, sentence adverbs that comment on a whole clause (purtroppo, naturalmente, probabilmente), and any case where the prepositional alternative does not exist or sounds odd. The art is knowing when to pick which. questions

Six questions about italian adverbs without mente come up in every B1 cohort, and the answers below tackle the trickiest italian adverbs without mente patterns directly. The answers below draw on real classroom usage and on the Accademia della Crusca consulenza Di fretta, in fretta, di corsa, a corsa.

What is the difference between in fretta and di fretta?

They are largely interchangeable, especially with verbs of movement: uscire in fretta and uscire di fretta both mean to leave hurriedly. The Accademia della Crusca treats them as synonymous in that context. A small nuance: di fretta tends to suggest the speaker is in a hurry as a state, while in fretta describes the action itself. Camminava di fretta hints that the person was rushed; camminava in fretta says she walked quickly. In practice both forms are heard daily and either one is correct.

Can I always replace di solito with solitamente?

Yes, the meaning is the same and both are correct. The difference is register and frequency. Di solito is the everyday word, what you hear in conversation, what an Italian friend says when they describe their habits. Solitamente sounds slightly more written or formal, the kind of word you find in a newspaper article or a manual. For spoken Italian and informal writing, prefer di solito. For academic or technical writing, solitamente is fine. Neither is wrong, but di solito is the safer default for sounding natural.

Why is it parla chiaro and not parla chiaramente?

Both exist but mean slightly different things. Parla chiaramente means he speaks in a way that is easy to understand, the words are clear, the diction is good. Parla chiaro means he speaks frankly, he doesn’t hide his opinion, he gets to the point. The bare adjective has hardened into an idiom with a metaphorical sense (frankness), while the -mente adverb keeps the literal meaning (clarity of speech). This kind of split is common with bare adjectives as adverbs: parla chiaro, vede chiaro, fila dritto all develop figurative meanings that the -mente version does not have.

Is alla svelta more informal than velocemente?

Yes, slightly. Alla svelta belongs to spoken Italian and has a brisk, almost impatient flavour. It is the word you use when telling a child to hurry up or when describing a task done in a rush. Velocemente is neutral and works in any register, written or spoken. In fretta sits between the two: more idiomatic than velocemente, less colloquial than alla svelta. So the ranking for everyday speech is: in fretta is the safest default, velocemente is the neutral written choice, alla svelta adds urgency and informality.

When should I use in maniera + adjective instead of -mente?

Use in maniera + feminine adjective (or in modo + masculine adjective) when the -mente form sounds awkward, when you cannot remember it, or when you want to put extra emphasis on the manner. The frame works with virtually any descriptive adjective: in maniera elegante, in modo strano, in maniera precisa. It is the most productive way to build new italian adverbs without mente on the fly. There is also a subtle nuance with italian adverbs without mente: in maniera + adjective sometimes highlights physical manner, while the -mente adverb just reports the action. Mangiò in maniera molto rapida hints at hasty, rude eating; mangiò molto rapidamente just says the meal was short.

Does piano mean slowly or quietly?

Both, depending on the verb. Vai piano in macchina means drive slowly. Parla piano can mean either speak slowly (so I can understand) or speak quietly (so we don’t wake the baby), and only the context disambiguates. If you need to be precise about quietness, say parla a voce bassa or sotto voce. If you need to be precise about slowness, say parla lentamente or parla con calma. The bare adjective piano is the everyday choice and Italians understand it from the situation. The famous proverb chi va piano va sano e va lontano clearly uses piano in the slowness sense.

Related guides

Four guides that pair with italian adverbs without mente, plus an institutional reference from the Accademia della Crusca on the most common italian adverbs without mente.

Italian Adverbs: Formation, Position, Types: the main pillar on the -mente adverbs, perfect contrast to this guide.

Italian A Poco A Poco: Repeated Phrases: the doubled-noun adverbial phrases in depth.

Italian Repeated Adjectives: Rosso Rosso for Emphasis: the related piano piano, presto presto doubling pattern.

Italian Corri Corri: Doubled Verbs as Adverbs: another non-mente adverbial pattern.

Accademia della Crusca: Di fretta, in fretta, di corsa, a corsa: institutional note on the difference between the two most common adverbial phrases.

🔍 In short.
