English would say here and there, or scattered around. Notice that this pair uses <em>qua<\/em> and <em>l\u00e0<\/em>, never <em>qui<\/em> and <em>l\u00ec<\/em>. As a rule, if the place is precise, <em>qui\/l\u00ec + sotto\/sopra<\/em>; if the place is vague and at some distance, <em>qua\/l\u00e0 + sotto\/sopra<\/em>. Fixing them is fast and immediate. Each trap below targets a specific pattern that English speakers tend to misread on first contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trap-1\">Trap 1: Confusing su e gi\u00f9 with su per gi\u00f9 in this family<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The connector decides everything in this branch of the family. <em>Su e gi\u00f9<\/em> with <em>e<\/em> means physical back-and-forth. <em>Su per gi\u00f9<\/em> with <em>per<\/em> means roughly, about. Saying <em>il furgone va su per gi\u00f9<\/em> sounds wrong: it would mean the van is approximately. Conversely, <em>su e gi\u00f9 trecento alberi<\/em> is wrong: trees do not move. Lock the pair: <em>e<\/em> for motion, <em>per<\/em> for approximation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trap-2\">Trap 2: Writing sottosopra as two words<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside this family, the standard modern spelling is <em>sottosopra<\/em>, one word, when you mean upside down or in a mess. The two-word version <em>sotto sopra<\/em> exists in old texts but feels archaic today. If you write <em>la casa \u00e8 sotto sopra<\/em>, a native reader will pause for a second; <em>la casa \u00e8 sottosopra<\/em> reads cleanly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trap-3\">Trap 3: Using avanti as a preposition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside this family, <em>avanti<\/em> is an adverb (forward) or an interjection (come in!), not a preposition. The preposition meaning in front of is <em>davanti a<\/em>. <em>Avanti alla porta<\/em> is wrong; the correct form is <em>davanti alla porta<\/em>. Inside the pair <em>avanti e indietro<\/em>, the word stays adverbial: it describes motion, not location relative to an object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trap-4\">Trap 4: Italian sotto sopra su giu tutt&#8217;intorno without the apostrophe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside this family, the elision of <em>tutto<\/em> to <em>tutt&#8217;<\/em> is required by the Treccani note on the adverbial set <em>tutt&#8217;a un tratto, tutt&#8217;al pi\u00f9, tutt&#8217;intorno, tutt&#8217;altro<\/em>. Writing <em>tutto intorno<\/em> as two words is not wrong, but it is much less common in published prose.
