They change ending to match the noun in gender and number: masculine singular <em>-o<\/em>, feminine singular <em>-a<\/em>, masculine plural <em>-i<\/em>, feminine plural <em>-e<\/em>. (masculine plural: -esimi)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the same agreement system you already know from any descriptive word: <em>buono, buona, buoni, buone<\/em>. There is no extra rule to learn for italian special ordinals, only the reflex to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"popes\">Popes and monarchs: reading Roman numerals out loud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is one of the most useful pieces of Italian general culture for any reader of newspapers, history books, or museum captions. With <strong>popes, kings, queens, princes, dukes<\/strong> the name is written with a Roman numeral and read as one of the italian special ordinals, not as a cardinal. <em>Papa Giovanni XXIII<\/em> is read out loud as <em>papa Giovanni ventitreesimo<\/em>, never <em>papa Giovanni ventitr\u00e9<\/em>. <em>Regina Elisabetta II<\/em> is <em>regina Elisabetta seconda<\/em>. <em>Re Carlo III<\/em> is <em>re Carlo terzo<\/em>. This is the single most visible application of italian special ordinals in modern news writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two further details make this construction unmistakable. First, the ranking word comes <strong>after<\/strong> the proper name, not before: <em>Carlo quinto<\/em>, not <em>il quinto Carlo<\/em>. Second, no definite article appears between name and number: Italian does not say <em>Giovanni il ventitreesimo<\/em>, only <em>Giovanni ventitreesimo<\/em>. It exists, but it is considered borrowed and is generally discouraged for the names of the monarchs themselves. Stick with italian special ordinals and you will always be on solid ground. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treccani.it\/enciclopedia\/numerali_%28La-grammatica-italiana%29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Treccani entry on numerals<\/a> calls the cardinal-only variant <em>sconsigliabile<\/em> and recommends italian special ordinals for sovereign names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"latin\">The Latin-style forms: decimoprimo, vigesimoterzo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian holds a second, older set of italian special ordinals inherited from Latin tradition. They were standard until the nineteenth century and are still met today in three precise zones: <strong>names of popes<\/strong> in older church documents, <strong>chapter and stanza numbers<\/strong> in literary editions, and <strong>centuries<\/strong> in elevated prose. These Latin-style italian special ordinals are built by gluing the ranking word for the multiple of ten (decimo, ventesimo, trentesimo) onto the ranking word for the unit (primo, secondo, terzo). They always follow the noun.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>11th = decimoprimo (or undecimo)<\/li>\n<li>12th = decimosecondo (or duodecimo)<\/li>\n<li>13th = decimoterzo<\/li>\n<li>14th = decimoquarto<\/li>\n<li>15th = decimoquinto<\/li>\n<li>16th = decimosesto<\/li>\n<li>17th = decimosettimo<\/li>\n<li>18th = decimottavo<\/li>\n<li>19th = decimonono<\/li>\n<li>20th = vigesimo<\/li>\n<li>21st = vigesimoprimo, 23rd = vigesimoterzo<\/li>\n<li>30th = trigesimo, 40th = quadragesimo, 50th = quinquagesimo<\/li>\n<li>60th = sessagesimo, 70th = settuagesimo, 80th = ottagesimo, 90th = nonagesimo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will see these archaic italian special ordinals on the spine of an old volume (<em>Capitolo decimoprimo<\/em>), inside a museum caption (<em>Pio undecimo<\/em>), inside an art history essay (<em>L&#8217;Italia del secolo decimoterzo<\/em>). You are not expected to produce them in everyday speech: a Rieti pharmacist sending you to the eleventh floor will say <em>undicesimo piano<\/em>, not <em>decimoprimo piano<\/em>. But you should recognise them when reading, because the regular italian special ordinals (<em>undicesimo, dodicesimo<\/em>) and the Latin forms (<em>decimoprimo, decimosecondo<\/em>) refer to exactly the same number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"centuries\">Centuries: il secolo tredicesimo or il Duecento?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian has not one but three ways to name a century, and a B1 reader meets all three within the same page. Two of them rely on italian special ordinals. The Roman numeral form (<em>il XIII secolo<\/em>) is the most neutral and dominates textbooks and museum panels: silently read aloud, the Roman numeral becomes one of the italian special ordinals (<em>tredicesimo<\/em>). The ranking word form (<em>il secolo tredicesimo<\/em> or <em>il tredicesimo secolo<\/em>) writes the same italian special ordinals out in letters, a notch higher in register and typical of older essays. The nickname carries the whole meaning, no italian special ordinals required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"position\">Where the ordinal sits: before or after the noun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The default position for italian special ordinals is <strong>before<\/strong> the noun, mirroring the English habit. Among italian special ordinals there is <em>ennesimo<\/em>, literally &#8220;the nth&#8221;, originally a mathematical term, now widely used in journalism and informal speech to mean &#8220;yet another&#8221;, &#8220;the umpteenth&#8221;, usually with a note of exasperation: <em>per l&#8217;ennesima volta ti chiedo di chiudere la porta<\/em> (for the umpteenth time I&#8217;m asking you to close the door), <em>ennesimo incidente al cantiere di via Roma<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cheat-sheet\">Cheat sheet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This cheat sheet pulls the main italian special ordinals into one compact view, from the regular eleven-and-up forms to the Latin-style alternatives.
