You cannot freely swap <em>per<\/em> for <em>come<\/em> in these sentences: *<em>lo prendono come matto<\/em> sounds wrong, because <em>prendere per<\/em> is a fixed combination. The same is true for <em>passare per<\/em> and <em>scambiare per<\/em>. If you replaced them with <em>come<\/em>, an italian listener would notice the slip immediately. The sentence *<em>lavora per direttore<\/em> is wrong: <em>per<\/em> + job title means nothing in italian.
