On one side, the adjective: &#8220;che appartiene a una determinata persona, che \u00e8 veramente suo e non d&#8217;altri&#8221;, that is, &#8220;belonging to one specific person, genuinely theirs and nobody else&#8217;s&#8221;. On the other, the adverb: &#8220;esattamente, precisamente, per l&#8217;appunto&#8221;, which we translate as &#8220;exactly&#8221;, &#8220;just&#8221;, &#8220;right&#8221;, and the variant &#8220;veramente, davvero&#8221; that we translate as &#8220;really&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two senses share an idea of <em>precision<\/em>. The adjective pins ownership to a precise person; the adverb pins emphasis to a precise word. Once you see that thread, <em>italian proprio<\/em> stops feeling like two unrelated words and starts feeling like one word doing two jobs:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ognuno deve fare il <strong>proprio<\/strong> dovere. <em>Everyone must do their own duty. (adjective: &#8220;own&#8221;)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00c8 <strong>proprio<\/strong> vero quello che dice Wanda. <em>What Wanda says is really true. Get the adjective right first: that is where the meaning of <em>italian proprio<\/em> gives English speakers the most trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"own\">Proprio as &#8220;one&#8217;s own&#8221;: the adjective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an adjective <em>proprio<\/em> means &#8220;own&#8221;. It can cover all six persons: <em>il mio proprio letto<\/em> (my own bed), <em>il tuo proprio libro<\/em> (your own book), <em>il suo proprio destino<\/em> (his\/her own destiny), <em>il nostro proprio giardino<\/em> (our own garden), <em>il vostro proprio progetto<\/em> (your own project), <em>il loro proprio errore<\/em> (their own mistake). Like other Italian adjectives it agrees in gender and number with the noun it modifies: <em>proprio<\/em>, <em>propria<\/em>, <em>propri<\/em>, <em>proprie<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ognuno in archivio deve avere il <strong>proprio<\/strong> paio di guanti di cotone. <em>Everyone in the archive must have their own pair of cotton gloves.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ciascun ricercatore registra la <strong>propria<\/strong> ora d&#8217;ingresso al banco. <em>Each researcher registers their own entry time at the desk.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I Leopardi volevano preservare la <strong>propria<\/strong> biblioteca dopo la morte di Giacomo. <em>The Leopardi family wanted to preserve their own library after Giacomo&#8217;s death.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Tullio ha portato i <strong>propri<\/strong> appunti universitari per confrontarli con i manoscritti. <em>Tullio brought his own university notes to compare them with the manuscripts.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ognuno ha le <strong>proprie<\/strong> idee su come ordinare l&#8217;archivio. <em>Everyone has their own ideas about how to organise the archive.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The position of <em>italian proprio<\/em> is fixed: it almost always goes before the noun, just like <em>mio<\/em>, <em>tuo<\/em>, <em>suo<\/em>. It is also, like the other possessives, usually preceded by the definite article (<em>il proprio dovere<\/em>, <em>la propria casa<\/em>), unless the noun is a singular family member (<em>proprio padre<\/em>, <em>propria madre<\/em>) or sits inside one of the set phrases we cover later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One more move: <em>italian proprio<\/em> can act as a possessive pronoun, replacing both article and noun when the noun is already known. The sentence <em>Tullio ha portato gli appunti di Wanda e i propri<\/em> means &#8220;Tullio brought Wanda&#8217;s notes and his own&#8221;. This is the same trick that <em>il mio<\/em>, <em>la tua<\/em>, <em>i nostri<\/em> play; <em>proprio<\/em> simply joins the club for the &#8220;own&#8221; sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vs-suo\">Italian proprio or suo: when each wins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the question that brings <em>italian proprio<\/em> into focus for any B1 learner. Italian has two ways to say &#8220;his&#8221;, &#8220;her&#8221; or &#8220;their&#8221; when the owner is the subject of the sentence: <em>suo\/loro<\/em> and <em>proprio<\/em>. In neutral writing they often look interchangeable, but <em>proprio<\/em> wins in three situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Indefinite subjects.<\/strong> When the subject is an impersonal <em>si<\/em>, <em>uno<\/em>, <em>ognuno<\/em>, <em>ciascuno<\/em>, <em>chiunque<\/em>, <em>nessuno<\/em>, Italian strongly prefers <em>italian proprio<\/em>. <em>Ognuno deve fare il proprio dovere<\/em> sounds natural; <em>ognuno deve fare il suo dovere<\/em> is heard but feels less precise. Compare the Treccani test case:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ci si interroga sul <strong>proprio<\/strong> destino. <em>One wonders about one&#8217;s own fate.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ci si interroga sul <strong>suo<\/strong> destino. <em>One wonders about his\/her fate (somebody else&#8217;s).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first sentence is reflexive: the fate belongs to the same impersonal person who is wondering. The second is not: the fate belongs to a different, third party. With <em>ognuno<\/em>, <em>ciascuno<\/em>, <em>chiunque<\/em> and the like, choosing <em>italian proprio<\/em> sends the clean reflexive signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Avoiding ambiguity with third persons.<\/strong> Italian <em>suo<\/em> and <em>loro<\/em> do not distinguish &#8220;his&#8221;, &#8220;her&#8221; or &#8220;their&#8221;, and a sentence like <em>Wanda ha portato Tullio nella sua biblioteca<\/em> can mean Wanda&#8217;s library or Tullio&#8217;s. Using <em>italian proprio<\/em> forces a reflexive reading on the subject:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wanda ha portato Tullio nella <strong>propria<\/strong> biblioteca. <em>Wanda took Tullio to her own library. (Wanda&#8217;s)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Wanda ha portato Tullio nella <strong>sua<\/strong> biblioteca. <em>Wanda took Tullio to his\/her library. (could be either)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Set expressions.<\/strong> A handful of nouns lock <em>italian proprio<\/em> in by tradition: <em>fare il proprio dovere<\/em>, <em>seguire la propria strada<\/em>, <em>essere padrone della propria casa<\/em>, <em>conoscere il proprio mestiere<\/em>, <em>amor proprio<\/em>. <em>Suo<\/em> would be understood but sounds slightly off. Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Volevo il mio <strong>proprio<\/strong> letto, non quello dell&#8217;albergo. <em>I wanted my own bed, not the hotel one.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Avete abbandonato il vostro <strong>proprio<\/strong> giardino, ora \u00e8 pieno di erbacce. <em>You&#8217;ve abandoned your own garden, now it&#8217;s full of weeds.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Vorrei riscrivere queste note con le mie <strong>proprie<\/strong> parole. <em>I&#8217;d like to rewrite these notes in my own words.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be aware: <em>mio proprio<\/em>, <em>tuo proprio<\/em>, <em>nostro proprio<\/em>, <em>vostro proprio<\/em> sound emphatic. Everyday Italian prefers the simple <em>il mio letto<\/em>, <em>il vostro giardino<\/em>, and reserves <em>mio proprio<\/em> for contrast (&#8220;mine and only mine, not the shared one&#8221;). Use the double form when you need that extra contrastive nudge; otherwise drop <em>proprio<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"adverb\">Italian proprio as &#8220;really, exactly&#8221;: the adverb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switch costume: <em>italian proprio<\/em> changes job. The same word, with no agreement and no article, becomes one of the workhorse intensifying adverbs of spoken Italian. As an adverb <em>italian proprio<\/em> covers a band that English splits across &#8220;really&#8221;, &#8220;exactly&#8221;, &#8220;just&#8221;, &#8220;right&#8221;. It signals that you mean what you are saying with precision, not as an approximation. The Treccani Grammatica 2012 lists it alongside <em>certo<\/em>, <em>davvero<\/em>, <em>precisamente<\/em>, <em>sicuramente<\/em>, in the family of &#8220;avverbi di affermazione&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00c8 <strong>proprio<\/strong> vero! <em>It&#8217;s really true!<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Proprio<\/strong> cos\u00ec. <em>Exactly so. \/ That&#8217;s right.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Tullio fa <strong>proprio<\/strong> fatica a decifrare le abbreviazioni del Settecento. <em>Tullio is really struggling to make out the eighteenth-century abbreviations.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Hai <strong>proprio<\/strong> ragione: la grafia di Monaldo \u00e8 inconfondibile. <em>You&#8217;re right on the dot: Monaldo&#8217;s handwriting is unmistakable.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>L&#8217;autobus per Recanati ferma <strong>proprio<\/strong> davanti alla biblioteca. <em>The bus to Recanati stops right in front of the library.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Spero <strong>proprio<\/strong> che il restauro arrivi in tempo per la mostra. <em>I really hope the restoration arrives in time for the exhibition.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Position matters. As an adverb, <em>italian proprio<\/em> sits immediately next to the word it intensifies. <em>\u00c8 proprio vero<\/em> intensifies <em>vero<\/em>; <em>proprio davanti alla biblioteca<\/em> intensifies <em>davanti alla biblioteca<\/em>. Move <em>proprio<\/em> away from that word and the emphasis dilutes or shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared with the close cousins <em>davvero<\/em> and <em>veramente<\/em>, the adverbial <em>italian proprio<\/em> is more pointed and less mobile. <em>Davvero<\/em> and <em>veramente<\/em> can float around the sentence; <em>proprio<\/em> usually wants to glue itself to the precise word or phrase it underlines. If you would say &#8220;exactly&#8221; or &#8220;right&#8221; in English (right here, exactly that, just like this), reach for <em>proprio<\/em>. If you would say &#8220;really&#8221; in a broader, more emotional sense, both <em>davvero<\/em> and <em>proprio<\/em> can work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"non-proprio\">Italian proprio in the negative: the polite &#8220;not really&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spoken Italian has a small trap with the adverbial <em>italian proprio<\/em>: word order changes the meaning. Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Proprio non<\/strong> capisco questa nota a margine. <em>I really don&#8217;t understand this marginal note. (strong)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Non capisco <strong>proprio<\/strong>. <em>I really don&#8217;t understand. (also strong, identical sense)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Non proprio<\/strong>. <em>Not really. (soft, polite &#8220;no&#8221;)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first two amplify the negation: total failure to understand. The third one, the short answer <em>non proprio<\/em>, is the opposite move: a softener. When an Italian replies <em>non proprio<\/em> or <em>non esattamente<\/em> to your question, most of the time they mean a polite &#8220;no&#8221; and they are giving you a chance to rephrase. Take the hint.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(Hai trovato il manoscritto?) <em>Non proprio.<\/em> Ho trovato una copia, ma non l&#8217;originale. <em>(Did you find the manuscript?) Not really. I found a copy, but not the original.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>(\u00c8 tua quella valigia?) <em>Non proprio<\/em>, \u00e8 di mia sorella. <em>(Is that suitcase yours?) Not really, it&#8217;s my sister&#8217;s.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the rule of thumb for <em>italian proprio<\/em> in the negative: <em>proprio<\/em> before or after the verb intensifies. <em>Non proprio<\/em> on its own, as a stand-alone short reply, softens. Learners often produce the first when they want the third, and vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"set-phrases\">Italian proprio in set phrases: in proprio, amor proprio, di proprio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few set phrases use <em>italian proprio<\/em> in ways that look strange the first time. They are worth memorising as units.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lavorare in proprio<\/strong> = to be self-employed, to work for oneself. <em>Wanda lavora in proprio come restauratrice di carte antiche.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mettersi in proprio<\/strong> = to start your own business, to go solo. <em>Dopo dieci anni in studio, Tullio si \u00e8 messo in proprio.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Amor proprio<\/strong> = self-respect, self-regard, sometimes pride. <em>Per amor proprio non ha voluto chiedere aiuto.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Di proprio<\/strong> = of one&#8217;s own (often with <em>nulla<\/em>, <em>poco<\/em>, <em>molto<\/em>). <em>Non ha aggiunto nulla di proprio al saggio: ha solo riportato fonti.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nome proprio<\/strong> = proper noun (the grammar term). <em>&#8220;Giacomo&#8221; \u00e8 un nome proprio di persona, &#8220;poeta&#8221; un nome comune.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>In senso proprio<\/strong> = in the literal sense, as opposed to <em>in senso figurato<\/em>. <em>&#8220;Incatenato&#8221; qui \u00e8 in senso proprio: aveva catene alle mani.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Coltivare il proprio orticello<\/strong> = mind one&#8217;s own business, tend one&#8217;s own garden. <em>Preferisce coltivare il proprio orticello e non commentare le scelte altrui.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that several of these <em>italian proprio<\/em> set phrases (<em>in proprio<\/em>, <em>amor proprio<\/em>, <em>di proprio<\/em>, <em>in senso proprio<\/em>) skip the article. That is a fossilised habit of older Italian, preserved inside the phrase.
