Two shapes do all the work: <em>tutti noi \/ tutti voi \/ tutti loro<\/em> when the pronoun is on its own, and a tiny pronoun stuck to the verb plus <em>tutti<\/em> after the verb when there is an action involved: <em>vi conosco tutti<\/em>, <em>le ho viste tutte<\/em>, <em>ce l&#8217;hanno dato a tutti<\/em>. The italian pronoun tutti family has two clean ways to attach &#8220;all of&#8221; to a pronoun, and which one you pick depends on whether the pronoun is standing alone or doing a job inside a verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shape one is the simplest: <em>tutti<\/em> sits right next to a stressed pronoun, with no verb in between. <em>Tutti noi<\/em> (all of us), <em>tutti voi<\/em> (all of you), <em>tutti loro<\/em> (all of them). Shape two is the one that throws English speakers. There is no singular version of the italian pronoun tutti pattern: you cannot say &#8220;all of me&#8221; or &#8220;all of you (one person)&#8221;, and English does not say that either. First, the order is fixed: <em>tutti<\/em> before the stressed pronoun, never the other way round. You will hear children say &#8220;noi tutti&#8221;, but the textbook order is <em>tutti noi<\/em>. Second, agreement is for gender: <em>tutti<\/em> for a mixed or male group, <em>tutte<\/em> for an all-female one. <em>Tutte noi, ragazze, eravamo l\u00ec sul trabocco<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-focus-bare\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udd0d <strong>One rule.<\/strong> When the pronoun stands alone (subject, object of preposition), put <em>tutti<\/em> in front: <em>tutti noi<\/em>, <em>tutti voi<\/em>, <em>tutti loro<\/em>. Because the small attached pronouns in Italian cannot carry stress; they cannot host an adjective like <em>tutti<\/em> on their own. So Italian places the pronoun in its grammatical slot and then echoes the &#8220;all of&#8221; idea at the end of the verb phrase. In a sentence like <em>Vi conosco tutti<\/em>, <em>vi<\/em> tells you who the object is and <em>tutti<\/em> tells you the scope is complete. The two pieces work as a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-tutti\">When tutti needs a in front<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is where the italian pronoun tutti pattern surprises most learners. If yes, you have an indirect object (the receiver), the small pronoun on the verb will be <em>gli, le, ci, vi, loro<\/em>, and <em>tutti<\/em> at the end needs <em>a<\/em>. If the verb just touches a person directly (<em>vedere, conoscere, aspettare, ascoltare, cercare, trovare<\/em>), there is no <em>a<\/em> and the post-verbal <em>tutti<\/em> stays bare: <em>vi vedo tutti, li conosco tutti, vi aspettiamo tutti<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what makes <em>ce l&#8217;hanno dato a tutti<\/em> so characteristic. The verb is <em>dare a<\/em>, the indirect-object pronoun <em>ci<\/em> becomes <em>ce<\/em> in front of <em>lo<\/em> (the combined form), and <em>tutti<\/em> shows up later with the inherited <em>a<\/em>.
