Italian agent nouns in <em>-tore<\/em>, <em>-trice<\/em> exist too (<em>lettore<\/em>, <em>scrittore<\/em>, <em>decoratrice<\/em>), but a sentence like <em>sono un mangiatore lento<\/em> sounds wrong to native ears. Italian readers parse it as &#8220;I&#8217;m an eater who happens to be slow&#8221; in general, slow at walking, slow at thinking, slow at most things, not specifically slow at eating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To say what English packs into <em>slow eater<\/em>, Italian unpacks the meaning into a relative clause. The fixed frame is <em>essere<\/em> + <em>uno<\/em> or <em>una<\/em> + <em>che<\/em> + the verb in the indicative: <em>sono uno che mangia lentamente<\/em>. This is the italian sono uno che pattern, and it is the workhorse for describing personality, habits, tendencies and roles in everyday speech. First, the focus verb after <em>che<\/em> stays in the third person singular (<em>si alza<\/em>, <em>parla<\/em>, <em>impasta<\/em>), because it agrees with <em>uno<\/em> or <em>una<\/em>, not with <em>io<\/em> or <em>tu<\/em>. Second, you can pile on more detail after the verb: time expressions (<em>da quarant&#8217;anni<\/em>), objects (<em>la creta a mano<\/em>), adverbs (<em>poco<\/em>, <em>tutto<\/em>). With <em>gente che<\/em>, the inner verb stays singular because <em>gente<\/em> is grammatically singular in Italian, even though it refers to many people: <em>gente che lavora<\/em>, never <em>gente che lavorano<\/em>. With <em>quelli che<\/em> and <em>quelle che<\/em>, the verb is plural to match: <em>quelli che lavorano<\/em>, <em>quelle che arrivano<\/em>. For exams, essays and formal writing, use <em>cui<\/em> with the right preposition. For dialogue, messages and any natural-sounding speech, the bare <em>che<\/em> version of the italian sono uno che pattern is perfectly acceptable. In Italian <em>gente<\/em> is grammatically singular, even though it means &#8220;people&#8221;. The verb after <em>che<\/em> stays singular: <em>siamo gente che lavora sodo<\/em>. The same applies anywhere <em>gente<\/em> appears as a subject: <em>la gente non capisce<\/em>, never <em>la gente non capiscono<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trap-6\">Trap 6: Forgetting to switch tense for past habits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For habits that are no longer current, both verbs shift to the imperfetto: <em>era uno che si arrabbiava facilmente<\/em>, not <em>\u00e8 uno che si arrabbiava facilmente<\/em>. Mixing tenses across the clause (<em>\u00e8 uno che si arrabbiava<\/em>) sounds odd unless you mean a real present trait illustrated by a past habit.
