The verb in the infinitive form (the dictionary form ending in -are, -ere, -ire) is doing the work that “to + verb” does in English. No subject is named, because the statement is general: it’s easy for anyone, important for everyone. This is one of the most common building blocks in spoken Italian and you’ll need it from your first phone call with your Italian friend in Ostia. Italian è facile dire as a structure is genuinely easy once you see the moving parts.

The italian è facile dire pattern looks deceptively close to English, but Italian has two small surprises: the optional di, and the choice between infinitive and che + verb when the subject changes. We’ll cover both, with examples drawn from an afternoon Cassiopea and Ennio spent walking the ruins of Ostia antica and then arguing over the menu at a marinara just outside the gates. By the end you’ll have a phrase you can use in any conversation, from giving travel advice to commenting on the weather. The italian è facile dire structure rewards a little practice with a lot of fluency.

Cosa impareremo oggi

👆🏻 Jump to section

The one-liner: è + adjective + infinitive

High-frequency adjectives in the pattern

Do you need “di”? There is no named subject. The infinitive itself is the subject, in the sense that the action of saying, studying, or travelling is what we are commenting on. English does the same thing, but adds the word “it” as a placeholder: “it’s easy to say”. Italian drops the placeholder and starts straight from è.

È facile dire.
It’s easy to say.

È difficile capire.
It’s hard to understand.

È importante studiare.
It’s important to study.

È bello viaggiare.
It’s nice to travel.

È meglio aspettare.
It’s better to wait.

Notice the rhythm: two short words, then the infinitive. Five sentences, five complete thoughts, none of them with a named subject. This compactness is one of the reasons spoken Italian moves so quickly. Italians stack these italian è facile dire opinions in everyday conversation: at the market, on the phone, in the car. Once your ear gets used to the rhythm, you’ll hear them everywhere.

High-frequency adjectives in the pattern

Not every adjective fits the impersonal mould of italian è facile dire. The pattern works mainly with adjectives that describe a quality or value of an action: how easy it is, how necessary, how pleasant, how foolish. The Treccani institutional grammar lists this as a proposizione soggettiva: the infinitive plays the role of the subject of è. Here is a working A2 set, the adjectives you’ll meet most often in textbook dialogues and real life.

È facile imparare l’italiano con i podcast.
It’s easy to learn Italian with podcasts.

È difficile orientarsi in centro a Roma.
It’s difficult to find your way in central Rome.

È importante prenotare il ristorante per sabato sera.
It’s important to book the restaurant for Saturday evening.

È bello camminare lungo il decumano di Ostia antica.
It’s lovely to walk along the decumanus of Ostia antica.

È utile portare l’acqua quando si visitano gli scavi.
It’s useful to bring water when visiting the ruins.

È necessario timbrare il biglietto prima di salire sul treno.
It’s necessary to stamp the ticket before boarding the train.

È meglio aspettare il pomeriggio per evitare il caldo.
It’s better to wait for the afternoon to avoid the heat.

È inutile correre, il museo apre alle dieci.
There’s no point running, the museum opens at ten.

È impossibile visitare tutta Ostia in una sola giornata.
It’s impossible to visit all of Ostia in just one day.

È giusto pagare il biglietto intero se si entra alle quattro.
It’s fair to pay full price if you go in at four.

Some adjectives are paired with their opposites: facile / difficile, possibile / impossibile, utile / inutile, bello / brutto, giusto / sbagliato. Others stand alone: meglio (which is technically a short form of “better”) and peggio (“worse”) are everywhere in casual speech. Bisogna (“one must”) works the same way grammatically but uses a different verb, and we’ll treat it in another guide.

🎯 Try this. Match an adjective from the list with one of these verbs in the infinitive: cucinare, dormire, guidare, nuotare, parlare al telefono.

__________ dopo un pasto pesante.

__________ una zuppa di lenticchie: dieci minuti e basta.

__________ italiano con un amico paziente.

__________ nel traffico di Napoli all’ora di punta.

__________ al mare a maggio: l’acqua è ancora fredda.

<details>
👉 Show answers

È difficile dormire dopo un pasto pesante.

È facile cucinare una zuppa di lenticchie: dieci minuti e basta.

È bello / utile parlare italiano al telefono con un amico paziente.

È difficile / impossibile guidare nel traffico di Napoli all’ora di punta.

È meglio / difficile nuotare al mare a maggio: l’acqua è ancora fredda.

</details>

Do you need “di”? The short answer

This is the moment most learners pause and check their grammar app. The answer is simpler than expected: in the italian è facile dire pattern, di is optional, and dropping it is more common in spoken Italian. È facile dire and è facile di dire both occur, but the version without di sounds lighter and more natural at the A2 level you’re aiming for. When an infinitive functions as the subject of an impersonal è + adjective, the preposition is not required.

È difficile prenotare un tavolo al ristorante di pesce il sabato sera.
It’s hard to book a table at the seafood restaurant on Saturday evening. (no di)

È importante sapere il nome della via in caso di emergenza.
It’s important to know the street name in case of emergency. (no di)

È bello passeggiare tra i mosaici delle Terme di Nettuno.
It’s lovely to stroll among the mosaics of the Baths of Neptune. (no di)

È meglio non aggiungere sale alle alici marinate.
It’s better not to add salt to the marinated anchovies. (no di)

The preposition di becomes necessary when the construction is personal rather than impersonal: Sono felice di vederti, Cassiopea è contenta di essere qui. With a named subject and an adjective of feeling, di is the link to the infinitive. That’s a different pattern, covered in our companion guide on adjectives with infinitive (bravo a fare, felice di vedere).

È facile fare vs è facile da fare

Italian has a second pattern that looks similar but means something different: è facile da fare. The preposition da appears when the adjective is describing a thing, not a general action. Compare:

È facile cucinare il pesce al sale. (general statement: cooking salt-baked fish is an easy thing to do)

Il pesce al sale è facile da cucinare. (describing the dish: this dish is easy to cook)

In the first sentence, cucinare il pesce al sale is the subject of è. The whole action is what’s easy. In the second sentence, the subject is il pesce al sale: the dish itself, and da cucinare describes what you do to it. The same logic explains why a guidebook says Ostia antica è facile da visitare (the site is easy to visit, talking about the site) but a friend giving advice says è facile visitare Ostia in mezza giornata (visiting Ostia in half a day is doable, talking about the general action).

For A2, here is the rule of thumb: italian è facile dire with the bare infinitive is for general statements (impersonal): use fare without preposition. If you can swap with “this X is easy to + verb”, use da fare (describing the noun). Native-speaker forums have long threads on this exact split, and the conclusion is always the same: bare infinitive for the general action, da + infinitive when you’re describing a specific thing.

When the subject changes: è importante che

Up to now everything has been impersonal: a general statement true for everyone. The moment you want to point at a specific person, the structure has to grow a tail. You can’t say è importante studiare Ennio to mean “it’s important that Ennio studies”. The verb has to change, and you need the word che. At A2 you’ll mainly hear two solutions:

È importante che tu studi ogni giorno.
It’s important that you study every day. (subjunctive: studi)

È meglio che noi prenotiamo subito.
It’s better that we book right away. (subjunctive: prenotiamo)

È difficile che Ennio arrivi prima delle otto.
It’s unlikely that Ennio will arrive before eight. (subjunctive: arrivi)

È necessario che voi partiate alle sette.
It’s necessary that you all leave at seven. (subjunctive: partiate)

The verb after che goes into the subjunctive (congiuntivo). The subjunctive is a B1 topic in its own right, but at A2 it’s enough to recognize the swap: when the second verb has its own subject, you need che + that verb, and the form is slightly different from the indicative you already know. We give the full picture in our guide to the Italian infinitive as a noun, which connects this pattern with other subject-clause uses.

Adding a pronoun to the infinitive

If the verb in the infinitive has an object, you can attach the object pronoun directly to the infinitive. The infinitive loses its final -e and the pronoun is welded on: dire + lo becomes dirlo. Capire + la becomes capirla. Fare + li becomes farli. This is the standard A2 way to handle object pronouns inside the italian è facile dire construction.

È facile dirlo, ma è difficile farlo.
It’s easy to say it, but it’s hard to do it.

Questo problema? È impossibile capirlo senza un esempio.
This problem? It’s impossible to understand it without an example.

Le alici sono ottime. È inutile cucinarle troppo.
The anchovies are excellent. There’s no point overcooking them.

È bello vederla così serena dopo la passeggiata.
It’s lovely to see her so peaceful after the walk.

What you cannot do is detach the pronoun and put it in front of è. The form lo è facile dire is wrong. The pronoun lives with the infinitive, not with the impersonal verb. This is the opposite of what happens with modal verbs like posso, where you have a choice: lo posso fare or posso farlo. With impersonal è + adjective, there’s no choice, the pronoun stays attached to the infinitive.

A side meaning: è facile che (it’s likely)

In spoken Italian, è facile che followed by the subjunctive doesn’t mean “it’s easy”. It means “it’s likely”. A native speaker hearing è facile che piova stasera will understand “it’s likely to rain tonight”, not “it’s easy that it rains”. Context disambiguates: if there’s no che and the infinitive follows directly, the meaning is “easy”. If che + subjunctive follows, the meaning slides toward “likely”. The same dual meaning is well documented in native-speaker discussions of this construction.

È facile capire questo testo. (easy to understand)

È facile che tu capisca questo testo. (it’s likely that you understand…)

È facile prenotare online. (easy to book)

È facile che Ennio prenoti il tavolo sbagliato. (it’s likely that Ennio books the wrong table)

The same dual meaning appears with è difficile: è difficile capire means “hard to understand”, while è difficile che venga means “it’s unlikely he’ll come”. class="wp-block-paragraph">These are the questions that English-speaking learners ask most often about the italian è facile dire structure, drawn from real native-speaker discussions and from the Treccani institutional grammar’s notes on subject clauses. The italian è facile dire pattern hides a few subtleties, and the answers below tackle them one by one.

Do I always need ‘di’ before the infinitive in ‘è facile dire’?

No. In the impersonal pattern, di is optional and is usually dropped in spoken Italian. È facile dire and è facile di dire both occur in writing, but è facile dire sounds more natural and is what you should aim for at A2 level. The optional di is a relic of older usage. The preposition di becomes obligatory only when the construction is personal: Sono felice di vederti needs di because the subject is named (io). When the subject is impersonal, the infinitive plays the role of subject by itself and no preposition is needed to link it to the adjective.

What’s the difference between ‘è facile fare’ and ‘è facile da fare’?

Different subjects. È facile fare X is impersonal: the general action of doing X is easy, with no specific thing in mind. Questo è facile da fare describes a specific thing: this particular item is easy to do. So you say è facile cucinare il pesce al sale (cooking salt-baked fish in general is easy) but il pesce al sale è facile da cucinare (this specific dish is easy to cook). In English the distinction is harder to see because both translate as ‘easy to’. The Italian preposition da signals that the infinitive describes the noun, like a passive description.

Can I use the subjunctive instead of the infinitive after ‘è importante’?

Yes, when the subject changes. Same subject for both verbs, you use the infinitive: è importante studiare (general or referring to the same speaker). Different subject, you switch to che + subjunctive: è importante che tu studi (it’s important that you study). The subjunctive is a B1 topic but at A2 you should recognize the pattern when you hear it. The full list of triggers includes è importante, è necessario, è meglio, è bello, è giusto, è difficile, è facile.

Does ‘è facile’ ever mean ‘it’s likely’?

Yes. È facile che + subjunctive means ‘it’s likely that’. È facile che piova domani means ‘it’s likely to rain tomorrow’. The same dual meaning applies to è difficile che, which means ‘it’s unlikely that’. Native speakers disambiguate with context: if che + subjunctive follows, the meaning slides toward probability. If the infinitive follows directly with no che, the meaning is ‘easy to’. You’ll mainly produce the first meaning at A2; you just need to recognize the second when you hear it.

Why does Italian say ‘è bello restare’ but English says ‘it’s nice TO stay’?

English needs the infinitive marker ‘to’ (or ‘for X to’) before the verb. Italian uses the bare infinitive after the impersonal è + adjective because the infinitive itself functions as the subject of è. The Treccani grammar calls this construction a proposizione soggettiva, a subject clause. You can think of restare as a noun-like form: the staying is nice. Italian also drops the placeholder ‘it’ that English requires; è bello restare is literally ‘is nice to-stay’ but reads as ‘it’s nice to stay’.

Can I attach an object pronoun to the infinitive after ‘è facile’?

Yes. The infinitive loses its final -e and the pronoun is welded on: dire + lo becomes dirlo, capire + la becomes capirla, fare + li becomes farli. So è facile dirlo, è difficile capirla, è impossibile farli. The pronoun cannot detach and jump in front of è: the form lo è facile dire is wrong. This is different from modal verbs like posso, where the pronoun can move: lo posso dire or posso dirlo are both fine. With impersonal è + adjective, the pronoun stays attached.

Is ‘è meglio’ followed by the infinitive or by ‘che’ + subjunctive?

Both, depending on the subject. È meglio aspettare is general advice for anyone (or for the speaker themselves). È meglio che tu aspetti is advice directed at a specific person, with the subjunctive aspetti showing that. The same logic applies to è meglio non discutere (general) and è meglio che voi non discutiate (specific). At A2 you’ll produce mainly the infinitive version. The subjunctive version is recognition-level: you should understand it when you hear it, even if you don’t produce it yet.

Related guides

Italian Adjectives + Infinitive: Bravo a Fare (B1): the personal counterpart with named subjects.

Italian Infinitive as Noun: Il Partire (B1): when the infinitive itself acts as a noun.

Italian Preposition DI: 13 Uses + Cheat Sheet (B1 Guide): the wider map of di, including di + infinitive.

Treccani: proposizioni soggettive: the institutional grammar entry on subject clauses.

🔍 In short.
