The interesting part starts when you add a second piece: who you are comparing with (<em>di Albino<\/em>), or what you are comparing against (<em>che pere<\/em>). Those two small words, <em>di<\/em> and <em>che<\/em>, split the work and a lot of A2 learners mix them up. If you can only ask &#8220;how much?&#8221;, the noun stays singular. So <em>pi\u00f9 mele<\/em> (more apples), but <em>pi\u00f9 pane<\/em> (more bread), never <em>pi\u00f9 panes<\/em>. So you get <em>dell&#8217;anno scorso<\/em>, <em>delle altre famiglie<\/em>, <em>del solito<\/em>. With a personal name or a stressed pronoun, <em>di<\/em> stays bare: <em>di Albino<\/em>, <em>di me<\/em>, <em>di te<\/em>, <em>di sua sorella<\/em>. The italian pi\u00f9 meno quantity structure is always <em>pi\u00f9<\/em> \/ <em>meno<\/em> + noun + <em>di<\/em> + the other player.<\/p>\n\n<p>One more useful italian pi\u00f9 meno quantity pattern lives in the same family: <em>pi\u00f9 del solito<\/em>, <em>meno del previsto<\/em>, <em>pi\u00f9 del normale<\/em>. These are everyday Italian phrases for &#8220;more than usual&#8221;, &#8220;less than expected&#8221;, &#8220;more than normal&#8221;. Italian ears notice it instantly. The first slips a <em>di<\/em> in because <em>un po&#8217;<\/em> already includes a quantity idea; the second goes straight to the noun. Both are everyday Italian, both are A2-friendly.
