First, these are <strong>nouns<\/strong>, not numbers: they take an article (<em>una<\/em> ventina, <em>un<\/em> centinaio) and they are followed by <strong>di + plural noun<\/strong>. Second, the meaning is &#8220;approximately X&#8221;, not exactly X. <em>Una ventina di delegati<\/em> might be eighteen, twenty-two, twenty-four; the point is &#8220;around twenty&#8221;. This is a real shortcut that Italian uses all the time, especially for holidays, work trips, deadlines. Saying <em>quindici giorni<\/em> sounds odd in this context; <em>una quindicina di giorni<\/em> is the natural choice.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-focus-ventina\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udd0d <strong>Age: una ventina d&#8217;anni.<\/strong> When you&#8217;re estimating someone&#8217;s age, the italian approximate numbers are almost unavoidable. <em>Avr\u00e0 una ventina d&#8217;anni<\/em> (about twenty), <em>una trentina d&#8217;anni<\/em> (about thirty), <em>una quarantina d&#8217;anni<\/em> (about forty). The same goes for <em>un migliaio<\/em> versus <em>mille<\/em>. In writing or speech where the count matters (a bill, a school register, an inventory), use the cardinal. In the plural they become <strong>feminine<\/strong>: <em>le<\/em> centinaia, <em>le<\/em> migliaia. The same applies to a small club of nouns that includes <em>uovo<\/em> (uova), <em>paio<\/em> (paia), <em>riso<\/em> (risa, in the &#8220;laughs&#8221; sense). Context decides. At a kitchen counter, <em>una dozzina di uova<\/em> almost always means exactly twelve, because eggs are sold by the box of twelve. In a conversation about colleagues at lunch, <em>una decina di colleghi<\/em> means around ten: nobody counted. <em>Un paio<\/em> swings the most: at a shoe shop it means exactly two shoes; in everyday speech it means &#8220;two or three, not many&#8221;. The same swing applies to other collective nouns like <em>la maggioranza<\/em>, <em>un gruppo<\/em>, <em>una percentuale<\/em>: strict singular vs natural plural.
