Tuscany sits in the middle and keeps the historical split. For a learner, the practical answer is to follow the region where you study, and to memorize the few Tuscan-style splits if you want the prestige form. Northern voicing is gaining ground everywhere and is widely felt as the &#8220;neutral&#8221; Italian today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"z-start\">Italian s and z: when z starts a word<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the italian s and z at the start of a word, the letter z has two faces.
