Casual Italian is not slang, it is just the working tone of the language among friends and family. They&#8217;re not slang, they&#8217;re not wrong, they&#8217;re not lazy. They&#8217;re the natural shape spoken Italian takes among friends, family, colleagues at lunch, and pretty much anyone you&#8217;d hang out with after class. Calvino, Pavese, Ginzburg, Ammaniti, Brizzi. The dialogues look nothing like the prose around them. People interrupt each other, drop subjects, mumble <em>boh<\/em>, throw in <em>tipo<\/em> three times in one sentence. None of this is broken Italian. It is casual Italian, and casual Italian has its own habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The split between written Italian and casual Italian is wide. Written Italian likes complete sentences, full subjects, and clean transitions. Casual Italian likes shortcuts, hesitation words, and tags that pull the listener in. The markers of casual Italian we are about to meet are the bricks of that style. They appear in any informal exchange: at a bar, on the phone, in a WhatsApp message, at a family dinner. They never appear in a job application or a business email. The skill at B1 is recognizing them, understanding them, and starting to use a handful naturally without overdoing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One practical note before we start: most of these markers don&#8217;t translate cleanly into one English word. <em>Mica<\/em>, <em>boh<\/em>, and <em>tipo<\/em> have rough English cousins (<em>not really<\/em>, <em>dunno<\/em>, <em>like<\/em>), but the match is loose. The real way to learn them is to feel where Italians slip them in, and try them in the same spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mica\">Mica: the negation booster you actually need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you only learn one casual Italian marker today, learn <em>mica<\/em>. It&#8217;s the most useful, the most common, and the one that instantly makes your Italian sound less like a textbook. The base meaning is &#8220;not at all&#8221; or &#8220;not really&#8221;. <em>Mica<\/em> reinforces a negation, often with a touch of surprise, doubt, or mild protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard pattern in southern and central Italy is <em>non + verb + mica<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Non sono mica scemo.<br><em>I&#8217;m not stupid, you know.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Non \u00e8 mica facile trovare casa a Bologna.<br><em>It&#8217;s not exactly easy to find a place in Bologna.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Beatrice non ha mica detto questo.<br><em>Beatrice didn&#8217;t say that at all.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Non l&#8217;ho mica fatto apposta!<br><em>I didn&#8217;t do it on purpose, come on!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Lorenzo non viene mica stasera.<br><em>Lorenzo isn&#8217;t coming tonight, actually.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also put <em>mica<\/em> at the front of the sentence, before the verb. In that position, the <em>non<\/em> disappears: <em>mica<\/em> alone carries the negation.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mica sono scemo!<br><em>Hey, I&#8217;m not stupid!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mica male questo posto.<br><em>Not bad at all, this place.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mica te l&#8217;avevo detto?<br><em>Didn&#8217;t I tell you?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mica ho voglia di uscire stasera.<br><em>I don&#8217;t really feel like going out tonight.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a fixed expression every B1 learner should bank: <em>mica male<\/em>, &#8220;not bad at all&#8221;. You&#8217;ll hear it about food, weather, a film, a new restaurant, a haircut. <em>Com&#8217;\u00e8 il vino? Mica male!<\/em> means the wine is in fact pretty good, with a small wink of pleasant surprise. <em>Mica<\/em> can also live without a full sentence: just <em>mica vero?<\/em> works as &#8220;really?&#8221;, a quick reaction of disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northern speakers, especially in Lombardy and around Milan, take <em>mica<\/em> a step further and drop the <em>non<\/em> even when the marker comes after the verb: <em>So mica niente, io!<\/em> (&#8220;I don&#8217;t know a thing, me!&#8221;). This sounds strongly regional and you don&#8217;t need to copy it, but recognize it when you hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"boh\">Boh: the all-purpose &#8216;I dunno&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Boh<\/em> is one of the most recognizable signs of casual Italian. It is the sound Italians make when they don&#8217;t know, don&#8217;t care to commit, or genuinely have no idea. It covers everything from a polite &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure&#8221; to a shrug-shaped &#8220;whatever&#8221;. Spelled <em>boh<\/em> (sometimes <em>bo<\/em>), it stands on its own as a one-word answer, or opens a sentence as a hedge.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00abVieni stasera?\u00bb \u00abBoh, dipende.\u00bb<br><em>&#8220;Are you coming tonight?&#8221; &#8220;Dunno, depends.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Boh, non saprei.<br><em>I have no idea, really.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00abDov&#8217;\u00e8 Tommaso?\u00bb \u00abBoh, forse al lavoro.\u00bb<br><em>&#8220;Where&#8217;s Tommaso?&#8221; &#8220;No clue, maybe at work.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Boh, magari domani ci sentiamo.<br><em>I dunno, maybe we&#8217;ll talk tomorrow.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00abTi piace?\u00bb \u00abBoh, cos\u00ec cos\u00ec.\u00bb<br><em>&#8220;Do you like it?&#8221; &#8220;Eh, so-so.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tone matters. A short, soft <em>boh<\/em> with a smile is friendly. A flat, dropped <em>boh<\/em> with a shrug can read as &#8220;I don&#8217;t care&#8221; or &#8220;stop bothering me&#8221;. Among friends and family it is neutral and constant, the heartbeat of casual Italian. With strangers, in shops, or in any formal exchange, use <em>non lo so<\/em> or <em>non saprei<\/em> instead. Saying <em>boh<\/em> to the bank teller will sound rude even if you didn&#8217;t mean it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two cousins of <em>boh<\/em> live in the same family: <em>mah<\/em> (a more skeptical &#8220;hm, I don&#8217;t know&#8221;) and <em>beh<\/em> (a hesitating &#8220;well&#8230;&#8221;). All three are interjections, all three appear constantly in casual Italian, and none of them belong in formal writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tipo\">Tipo: the Italian &#8216;like&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Tipo<\/em> literally means &#8220;type&#8221; or &#8220;kind&#8221;. In casual Italian, it has slipped into the role English gives to <em>like<\/em>: a filler that softens, approximates, or introduces an example. Younger speakers use it constantly, but it spreads across all ages, especially in northern and central Italy. It is perfectly understood from Trento to Palermo, a staple of casual Italian across regions.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ci vediamo tipo alle otto?<br><em>Shall we meet, like, around eight?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Tipo, ieri ho incontrato Federica al mercato.<br><em>Like, yesterday I ran into Federica at the market.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mi serve una cosa tipo un quaderno grande.<br><em>I need something, like, a big notebook.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Camilla \u00e8 tipo la migliore amica di Beatrice.<br><em>Camilla is, like, Beatrice&#8217;s best friend.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Volevo dirti una cosa, tipo&#8230; boh, non mi ricordo.<br><em>I wanted to tell you something, like&#8230; dunno, I forget.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three uses of this casual Italian filler are worth memorizing. First, <em>tipo + number\/time<\/em> means &#8220;around&#8221; or &#8220;roughly&#8221;: <em>tipo alle otto<\/em>, <em>tipo trenta euro<\/em>, <em>tipo cinque minuti<\/em>. Second, <em>tipo + example<\/em> means &#8220;for example&#8221; or &#8220;such as&#8221;: <em>frutta tipo le mele o le pere<\/em>. Third, sentence-initial <em>tipo<\/em> introduces a story or a recollection: <em>Tipo, l&#8217;altro giorno&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One warning: overdoing <em>tipo<\/em> can make you sound very young or unfocused. Italians notice when every other sentence opens with it. Aim for two or three uses per chat, not twenty. (not bad at all)<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cioe\">Cio\u00e8: &#8216;I mean&#8217; and a casual pause button<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cio\u00e8<\/em> is another flagship marker of casual Italian. It started life as a clean dichiarative connector meaning &#8220;that is&#8221;, &#8220;in other words&#8221;. It still does that job in formal writing. In casual Italian since the 1970s, however, it has taken on a second life as a pure filler, the rough equivalent of English &#8220;I mean&#8221; or &#8220;like, you know&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cio\u00e8, hai capito? Non l&#8217;ho fatto apposta.<br><em>I mean, you get it? I didn&#8217;t do it on purpose.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Beatrice \u00e8 uscita prima, cio\u00e8 verso le sei.<br><em>Beatrice left early, around six I mean.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mi piace, cio\u00e8, non \u00e8 male.<br><em>I like it, I mean, it&#8217;s not bad.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Cio\u00e8, dipende da quello che vuoi fare.<br><em>I mean, it depends on what you want to do.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Era una cosa strana, cio\u00e8&#8230; boh, non saprei spiegarla.<br><em>It was a weird thing, I mean&#8230; dunno, I couldn&#8217;t explain it.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its casual Italian filler use, <em>cio\u00e8<\/em> often carries no real meaning. It buys time, softens the next thought, or hooks the listener. The 1990s novel <em>Jack Frusciante \u00e8 uscito dal gruppo<\/em> by Enrico Brizzi is famously full of these <em>cio\u00e8<\/em>s, a literary photograph of how teenagers actually talked. Today the marker has aged with its users and casual Italian still embraces it: thirty- and forty-year-olds still drop it constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like <em>tipo<\/em>, the trick is not to overdo it. One or two <em>cio\u00e8<\/em>s per conversation feel natural. Five in a row sounds like you&#8217;re stalling. And in any formal exchange, switch back to <em>cio\u00e8<\/em>&#8216;s sober meaning (&#8220;that is, in other words&#8221;) or use <em>vale a dire<\/em>, <em>ovvero<\/em>, <em>in altre parole<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sto-sta\">&#8216;Sto and &#8216;sta: the short questo, questa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In casual Italian, the demonstrative <em>questo<\/em> often loses its first syllable. The result is <em>&#8216;sto<\/em> (masculine singular), <em>&#8216;sta<\/em> (feminine singular), <em>&#8216;sti<\/em> (masculine plural), <em>&#8216;ste<\/em> (feminine plural). You&#8217;ll see the apostrophe in writing only when an author wants to capture casual Italian on the page. Pier Paolo Pasolini did this constantly in his Roman novels; Niccol\u00f2 Ammaniti still does it today.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cos&#8217;\u00e8 tutto &#8216;sto casino?<br><em>What&#8217;s all this mess?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Non mi convince &#8216;sta storia.<br><em>This story doesn&#8217;t add up to me.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Sti ragazzi non si fermano mai.<br><em>These kids never stop.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Sto caff\u00e8 \u00e8 freddo, eh.<br><em>This coffee is cold, you know.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ma chi \u00e8 &#8216;sto Lorenzo di cui parli sempre?<br><em>Who&#8217;s this Lorenzo you keep talking about?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The forms <em>&#8216;sto\/&#8217;sta<\/em> are pure casual Italian and rarely show up at the start of a sentence in writing, but in speech they pop up all the time. You&#8217;ll also hear the longer family of fused forms: <em>stamattina<\/em> (questa mattina), <em>stasera<\/em> (questa sera), <em>stanotte<\/em> (questa notte), <em>stavolta<\/em> (questa volta), <em>stamane<\/em> (questa mattina, more Tuscan). These four are now fully accepted in writing too. <em>Stamattina ho preso il treno<\/em> is normal everywhere; <em>Questa mattina ho preso il treno<\/em> is just slightly more formal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another casual Italian habit reinforces the demonstrative with <em>qui, qua, l\u00ec, l\u00e0<\/em>: <em>questa casa qui<\/em>, <em>quel ragazzo l\u00e0<\/em>, <em>questi libri qua<\/em>. It sounds informal and friendly, like pointing with your voice. Useful when you genuinely need to single something out: <em>vorrei &#8216;sta torta qua, grazie<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cosa-questions\">Cosa? instead of Che cosa? in questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian has three ways to ask &#8220;what?&#8221;: <em>che?<\/em>, <em>cosa?<\/em>, and <em>che cosa?<\/em>. All three are correct, and casual Italian has its clear favorite. In casual Italian, <em>cosa?<\/em> alone wins by a landslide.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cosa fai stasera?<br><em>What are you doing tonight?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Cosa vuoi bere?<br><em>What do you want to drink?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Cosa? Non ti ho sentito.<br><em>What? I didn&#8217;t hear you.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Cosa hai detto a Camilla?<br><em>What did you tell Camilla?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A cosa stai pensando?<br><em>What are you thinking about?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The historical winner in writing was <em>che cosa<\/em>, but as early as the 1840s Manzoni quietly switched his characters to <em>cosa<\/em> in the second edition of <em>I promessi sposi<\/em>, copying the cultured spoken Florentine of his time. Today <em>cosa<\/em> is the most natural choice in conversation across all of Italy. <em>Che cosa<\/em> still works in slightly more formal writing or careful speech, and <em>che?<\/em> alone survives in short reactions: <em>Che?!<\/em> as a surprised &#8220;What?!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One more spoken habit hides in this corner: <em>che<\/em> can replace prepositional relatives in casual talk, the so-called undeclined <em>che<\/em>. You&#8217;ll hear <em>il giorno che sono arrivato<\/em> (&#8220;the day I arrived&#8221;) instead of <em>il giorno in cui sono arrivato<\/em>. It&#8217;s informal, very common in speech, and you should recognize it without copying it in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"no-tag\">No? the sentence-final tag<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">English has dozens of tag questions: <em>isn&#8217;t it?, doesn&#8217;t he?, are they?, right?, you know?<\/em>. Casual Italian has one universal handy tag for conversation: <em>no?<\/em> at the end of a sentence. It works after any statement, positive or negative, and it asks the listener to agree, confirm, or react.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bella la giornata, no?<br><em>Beautiful day, isn&#8217;t it?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Hai finito i compiti, no?<br><em>You&#8217;ve finished your homework, right?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Beatrice abita a Bologna, no?<br><em>Beatrice lives in Bologna, doesn&#8217;t she?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Lo sapevi, no?<br><em>You knew, didn&#8217;t you?<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Stasera vieni anche tu, no?<br><em>You&#8217;re coming tonight too, aren&#8217;t you?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A close relative is <em>vero?<\/em>, which means the same thing but feels slightly more careful: <em>Bella la giornata, vero?<\/em>. Even more formal is <em>non \u00e8 vero?<\/em>, sometimes contracted to <em>nevvero?<\/em> in literary writing. In casual Italian, plain <em>no?<\/em> covers ninety percent of cases. In northern Italy, especially Lombardy and Piedmont, you&#8217;ll also hear <em>n\u00e8?<\/em> or <em>n\u00e9h?<\/em>, regional flavors of the same tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One useful warning: <em>no?<\/em> only works as a tag, not as a real yes\/no question. If you&#8217;re genuinely unsure of the answer, ask a normal question: <em>Vieni stasera?<\/em>, not <em>vieni stasera, no?<\/em>. The tag implies you expect agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dropped-pronouns\">Dropping subject pronouns even harder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian textbooks already teach that subject pronouns (io, tu, lui, lei&#8230;) are optional. The verb ending tells you who, and casual Italian leans on this hard. In casual Italian, this principle goes from optional to almost obligatory. In all other cases, leave it out. In the South, Sicily and Naples especially, passato remoto is still alive in everyday speech: a Sicilian will say <em>arriv\u00f2<\/em>, <em>mor\u00ec<\/em>, <em>conobbi<\/em> without batting an eye.
