Italians reach for Italian purch\u00e9 whenever they want to set a single, often modest requirement without sounding strict. It usually signals that the speaker has some control over the main proposition: &#8220;this is all you have to do for X to happen&#8221;. Italian purch\u00e9 often softens the condition, presenting it almost as a personal preference rather than a strict rule. When a parent tells a teenager <em>esci, purch\u00e9 tu sia a casa per mezzanotte<\/em>, the message is &#8220;I&#8217;m easy on this, just respect this one limit&#8221;. The same condition stated with <em>a condizione che<\/em> would feel much firmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"patto-che\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A patto che: the negotiation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Italian purch\u00e9 is the soft cousin, <em>a patto che<\/em> is the negotiator. It comes up when two parties are striking a deal, each side setting a condition for the other. The word <em>patto<\/em> means &#8220;pact&#8221; or &#8220;agreement&#8221;, and the phrase carries that flavour: I&#8217;ll do my part, on condition that you do yours. A loan, an invitation, a permission: anything with a back-and-forth between two people sits naturally with <em>a patto che<\/em>. Unlike Italian purch\u00e9, it appears in writing more than in speech: contracts, regulations, insurance terms, formal communications. The tone is stronger than <em>a patto che<\/em>: where the latter feels like a friendly deal, <em>a condizione che<\/em> feels like a legal clause, &#8220;strictly on the condition that&#8221;. In speech it sometimes works as a more emphatic <em>a patto che<\/em>: <em>te lo dico a condizione che tu non lo ripeta<\/em>. The speaker is signalling that the condition is firm, not a friendly suggestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sempre-che\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sempre che: always assuming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth cousin in this family is <em>sempre che<\/em>, which adds a flavour the other three lack: doubt. Where <em>purch\u00e9<\/em> sets a condition the speaker is willing to accept, <em>sempre che<\/em> sets one the speaker is not sure will hold. English &#8220;always assuming that&#8221; captures it well. It expresses reservation or scepticism about whether the condition will be met, and it points to circumstances outside anyone&#8217;s control rather than to the speaker&#8217;s own terms. Like the others, it takes the subjunctive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Far\u00f2 finta di niente, sempre che l&#8217;incidente non si ripeta. <em>I&#8217;ll pretend nothing happened, always assuming the incident doesn&#8217;t repeat itself.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Andremo a Lucca domani, sempre che il tempo regga. <em>We&#8217;ll go to Lucca tomorrow, always assuming the weather holds up.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possiamo prolungare il noleggio, sempre che ci sia disponibilit\u00e0. <em>We can extend the rental, always assuming there&#8217;s availability.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caterina arriver\u00e0 in tempo, sempre che non ci sia traffico in autostrada. <em>Caterina will get here on time, always assuming there&#8217;s no traffic on the motorway.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the subtle difference from <em>purch\u00e9<\/em>: purch\u00e9 implies the condition is something the listener can act on; <em>sempre che<\/em> implies it lies outside everyone&#8217;s control. <em>Sempre che il tempo regga<\/em> asks nobody to do anything: it flags a risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"subjunctive\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the subjunctive is mandatory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All four conjunctions, <em>purch\u00e9<\/em>, <em>a patto che<\/em>, <em>a condizione che<\/em> and <em>sempre che<\/em>, share a grammatical feature that is not negotiable: they always take the subjunctive in the dependent clause, never the indicative. The reason lies in the meaning. A condition is, by definition, hypothetical: the event in the dependent clause has not happened yet, and may never happen. Italian marks this kind of unrealised proposition with the subjunctive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which subjunctive tense you pick depends on the main clause. When the main verb is a passato prossimo but the condition still holds at the moment of speaking, Italian keeps the present subjunctive, not the imperfetto: <em>Il medico mi ha dato il permesso di fare sport a patto che io non mi affatichi troppo<\/em>. The permission was given in the past, yet the condition is still in force now, so <em>affatichi<\/em> stays present. The rule of thumb: match the subjunctive to when the condition actually bites, not mechanically to the past tense of the main verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where learners stumble is not the conjunction but the pull toward the indicative when the condition feels concrete. <em>Te lo presto a patto che me lo restituisci stasera<\/em> sounds reasonable, yet it is wrong: the verb must be <em>restituisca<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"purche-final\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Condition vs purpose: affinch\u00e9 and pur di<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It helps to keep two ideas apart. Italian purch\u00e9, <em>a patto che<\/em> and <em>a condizione che<\/em> set a <strong>condition<\/strong>: X happens if Y is met. A different set of words sets a <strong>purpose<\/strong>: X is done so that Y can happen. The two families look alike but answer different questions, and Italian keeps them separate. For purpose with two different subjects, Italian uses <em>affinch\u00e9<\/em> or <em>perch\u00e9<\/em> plus the subjunctive, usually at the front of the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Affinch\u00e9 Margherita passi gli esami, i genitori le pagano un corso d&#8217;inglese a Brighton. <em>So that Margherita passes her exams, her parents are paying for an English course in Brighton.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Affinch\u00e9 la mia ragazza trovi un buon lavoro, sono disposto a seguirla in qualsiasi citt\u00e0. <em>So that my girlfriend finds a good job, I&#8217;m willing to follow her to any city.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Affinch\u00e9 i dipendenti siano pi\u00f9 motivati, il direttore aumenta lo stipendio a tutti. <em>So that the employees are more motivated, the director is increasing everyone&#8217;s pay.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if you mean &#8220;in order that&#8221;, reach for <em>affinch\u00e9<\/em> or <em>perch\u00e9<\/em>, not <em>purch\u00e9<\/em>. In standard use Italian purch\u00e9 introduces a condition, not a goal. You will occasionally meet <em>purch\u00e9<\/em> at the head of a sentence with a goal-like flavour, close to <em>affinch\u00e9<\/em>, but for a clear purpose the dedicated words are the safe choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"pur-di\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pur di: determination, not condition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a purpose clause shares its subject with the main clause, Italian drops the subjunctive and uses an infinitive. The neutral choice is <em>per<\/em> + infinitive (<em>studio per passare l&#8217;esame<\/em>). For a stronger flavour, the kind that says &#8220;I would do anything to get there&#8221;, Italian reaches for <em>pur di<\/em> + infinitive. It is not the infinitive version of <em>purch\u00e9<\/em> &#8220;provided that&#8221;. The same-subject form of a <strong>condition<\/strong> is different: there Italian uses <em>a patto di<\/em> or <em>a condizione di<\/em> + infinitive (<em>vengo a patto di non dover guidare<\/em>, &#8220;I&#8217;ll come on condition I don&#8217;t have to drive&#8221;). Keep the two apart: <em>pur di<\/em> + infinitive for a goal you chase, <em>a patto di<\/em> + infinitive for a condition you set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"solo-se\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solo se: the colloquial alternative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In casual speech, Italians often replace Italian purch\u00e9 and the formal trio with the plainer <em>solo se<\/em> (&#8220;only if&#8221;). The meaning is roughly that of <em>purch\u00e9<\/em>: a single condition without which the main clause won&#8217;t happen. Unlike the others, <em>solo se<\/em> follows the rules of ordinary <em>se<\/em>-clauses: it takes the indicative or the subjunctive, depending on whether the condition is real or hypothetical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Filippo rester\u00e0 a Pisa solo se trover\u00e0 presto un lavoro. <em>Filippo will stay in Pisa only if he finds a job soon.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vengo alla festa solo se ci sei anche tu. <em>I&#8217;m coming to the party only if you&#8217;re there too.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ti aiuto a finire il progetto solo se mi prometti di non chiedermi pi\u00f9 favori. <em>I&#8217;ll help you finish the project only if you promise not to ask me for any more favours.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trade-off: <em>solo se<\/em> sounds more natural in conversation, but it loses the precision of the trio. In a formal email, you&#8217;d reach for Italian purch\u00e9 or <em>a patto che<\/em> or <em>a condizione che<\/em>. Between friends, <em>solo se<\/em> does the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"position\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Position and punctuation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each conjunction has its preferred slot in the sentence, and Italian punctuation follows the slot.
