Italian opens a small space between them. <strong>Italian \u00e8 mia<\/strong> without the article is the default; <em>\u00e8 la mia<\/em> with the article is the version that picks one out of many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"adj-vs-pron\">Possessive as adjective vs as pronoun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand <strong>italian \u00e8 mia<\/strong>, look at what the possessive is doing. The article + possessive functions as a pronoun: it stands in for &#8220;the one that is mine&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pattern is especially common when the noun has already been mentioned and is dropped to avoid repetition. <em>Hai visto le mie scarpe? Quelle nere sono le mie<\/em>. The first sentence introduces the topic; the second one selects &#8220;the mine&#8221; among the visible options. The article + possessive answers the question &#8220;which one?&#8221;. <strong>Italian \u00e8 mia<\/strong> without article would also work in some of these, but the article version is sharper, more selective, more emphatic. The exception is <em>loro<\/em>, which is invariable: <em>\u00e8 loro<\/em>, <em>sono loro<\/em>, regardless of the noun&#8217;s gender or number. <em>Il libro \u00e8 loro<\/em>, <em>la valigia \u00e8 loro<\/em>, <em>i libri sono loro<\/em>, <em>le valigie sono loro<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"family\">Family members: an exception<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian drops the definite article before singular family members modified by a possessive. <em>Mio padre<\/em>, <em>mia madre<\/em>, <em>mio fratello<\/em>, <em>tua sorella<\/em>, <em>nostro figlio<\/em>. No <em>il, la<\/em>. The construction is one of the small quirks of Italian possessive grammar that learners must memorise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same drop applies in the predicate version. <em>Questo bambino \u00e8 mio figlio<\/em>, not <em>\u00e8 il mio figlio<\/em>. <em>Quella signora \u00e8 mia madre<\/em>, not <em>\u00e8 la mia madre<\/em>. The article returns when the family noun is plural (<em>i miei fratelli<\/em>, not <em>miei fratelli<\/em>), when it is modified by an adjective (<em>il mio fratello maggiore<\/em>), or when it is in diminutive or affectionate form (<em>la mia mamma<\/em>, <em>il mio pap\u00e0<\/em>, <em>il mio nonno<\/em>). The possessive sits at the end as a plain predicate, claiming or assigning the abstract item without an article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>L&#8217;idea \u00e8 mia, ma il merito \u00e8 di Lorenzo.<\/em> (The idea is mine, but the credit is Lorenzo&#8217;s.)<\/li>\n<li><em>La responsabilit\u00e0 \u00e8 tua, hai firmato tu.<\/em> (The responsibility is yours, you signed.)<\/li>\n<li><em>Il diritto di parola \u00e8 nostro.<\/em> (The right to speak is ours.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article version (<em>\u00e8 la mia<\/em>, <em>\u00e8 la tua<\/em>) is also possible with abstract nouns, but it shifts the meaning toward selection. <em>La responsabilit\u00e0 \u00e8 la tua<\/em> would suggest &#8220;among the responsibilities discussed, yours is this one&#8221;, which is rarely what speakers mean. For abstract claims, the predicate version is the natural choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"di-chi\">Answering &#8220;di chi \u00e8?&#8221; naturally<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question <em>di chi \u00e8?<\/em> (&#8220;whose is it?&#8221;) almost always gets the predicate answer with no article. A neighbour asks <em>di chi \u00e8 questa bicicletta?<\/em>; you answer <em>\u00e8 mia<\/em>. A teacher asks <em>di chi \u00e8 questo quaderno?<\/em>; the student answers <em>\u00e8 mio<\/em>. It&#8217;s theirs.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the question itself implies selection from a set (<em>quale \u00e8 il tuo libro?<\/em> &#8220;which is your book?&#8221;), the answer switches to the article version: <em>questo \u00e8 il mio<\/em>. The shape of the question helps you pick the shape of the answer. <em>Di chi<\/em> \u2192 no article. <em>Quale<\/em> \u2192 article. Italians switch between the two patterns instinctively in conversation, often without thinking about it. As a learner you can train the same instinct by listening to the question carefully: does it ask &#8220;whose&#8221; or &#8220;which&#8221;?
