Both work. The imperfect version reads more dramatically, more cinematically. It&#8217;s the choice of writers who want to slow the reader down and make them watch the event unfold. Open the cultural pages of any Italian newspaper on the anniversary of a famous figure&#8217;s death and you&#8217;ll meet it within the first paragraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sport\">The sports commentary version: cancelling sequence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sports writing uses the narrative imperfect with a slightly different goal: cancelling the strict succession of events. When a sportscaster narrates a match in the passato remoto or prossimo, each verb marks a discrete completed action in order: <em>Caterina pass\u00f2 la palla a Tommaso, che tir\u00f2 e segn\u00f2<\/em>. They feel different in context. Descriptive refers to a state, a setting, a habit, or an ongoing action interrupted by another verb.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Register.<\/strong> Narrative imperfect is formal written Italian: journalism, history, sports commentary, literary prose. Descriptive imperfect appears everywhere, including casual speech.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quick test: if you can rewrite the verb in the passato remoto without changing the meaning, just the register, you&#8217;re looking at a narrative imperfect. <em>Beethoven nasceva a Bonn nel 1770<\/em> rewrites cleanly as <em>Beethoven nacque a Bonn nel 1770<\/em>: same facts, less drama. <em>Pioveva quando Caterina \u00e8 arrivata<\/em> does not rewrite as <em>Piovve quando Caterina \u00e8 arrivata<\/em>: that changes the meaning, suggesting a brief rain shower at the moment of arrival rather than an ongoing rainy state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"traps\">Five traps for English speakers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trap-1\">Trap 1: Translating &#8220;nasceva&#8221; as &#8220;was being born&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The English continuous past (&#8220;was being born&#8221;) suggests a process unfolding over time, which biological birth obviously is not. <em>Beethoven nasceva nel 1770<\/em> does not mean Beethoven spent the year of 1770 in the process of being born. It means &#8220;Beethoven was born&#8221;, told with stylistic vividness. Translate the meaning, not the verbal aspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trap-2\">Trap 2: Using the narrative imperfect in casual conversation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading Italian newspapers, learners pick up the rhythm of narrative imperfect and try to use it in everyday speech. Italians notice. Saying <em>ieri sera incontravo Tommaso in piazza<\/em> for &#8220;yesterday evening I met Tommaso in the square&#8221; sounds like a police statement or a written report, not natural conversation. In speech, stick with <em>ho incontrato<\/em> for completed past events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trap-3\">Trap 3: Confusing narrative imperfect with descriptive imperfect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both look identical at the verb level. English journalism uses simple past or present tense for vividness (&#8220;Two centuries ago, Beethoven is born in Bonn&#8221;, historical present). Italian uses imperfect.
