Italian has two slots, and choosing between them is a small act of meaning. The neutral, unmarked position for a descriptive adjective is after the noun: <em>una casa rossa<\/em>, <em>un vino frizzante<\/em>, <em>un libro piacevole<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move the same adjective in front and you do not break the grammar; you change the colour. The postposed slot states an objective fact that sorts the noun from others; the preposed slot adds a subjective, expected or emotional shade. <em>I capelli neri<\/em> simply classifies; <em>strani discorsi<\/em> editorialises. That single contrast drives almost everything below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hard limit first. Relational adjectives, the ones that classify by origin or domain, must follow the noun: <em>un film americano<\/em>, <em>l&#8217;opera dantesca<\/em>, <em>un vino piemontese<\/em>. There is no <em>americano film<\/em>. With those out of the way, the rest of the system is a play between the two slots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"after-objective\">After the noun: the defining slot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put the adjective after the noun when it answers &#8220;which one&#8221; or states a plain, checkable property. Anything you could answer with &#8220;which?&#8221; lives in this slot. Advertising and political language exploit exactly this: <em>le nostre eroiche truppe<\/em>, <em>i delicati colori delle bluse<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-focus-adj\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udd0d <strong>The which test.<\/strong> If &#8220;which one?&#8221; is a sensible question, the adjective goes after (defining). If you are just colouring the noun, it goes before (evaluative). <em>la borsa nera<\/em> answers which; <em>una bella borsa<\/em> does not.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"meaning-pairs\">Pairs where position changes the meaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a small but very common set of adjectives, the two slots are not just stylistic: they carry different meanings. They define a subset rather than describe a quality.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ho molti bei ricordi di Padova.<br><em>I have many lovely memories of Padova.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ci sono troppe macchine in centro.<br><em>There are too many cars in the centre.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ho letto un altro libro di quell&#8217;autrice.<br><em>I read another book by that author.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00c8 il primo giorno di lavoro per Valeria.<br><em>It is Valeria&#8217;s first day at work.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This family includes <em>poco<\/em>, <em>molto<\/em>, <em>tanto<\/em>, <em>troppo<\/em>, <em>tutto<\/em>, <em>certi<\/em>, <em>altro<\/em>, <em>stesso<\/em>, ordinal numbers and the like. They sit in front of the noun and in front of any other adjective: <em>questi molti bellissimi cani<\/em>. Some, like <em>diversi<\/em> and <em>vari<\/em>, only mean &#8220;several&#8221; when preposed; postposed they go back to &#8220;different&#8221; or &#8220;varied&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"multiple\">Two or more adjectives: order and the e rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With several adjectives, Italian usually mirrors the English order, and a postposed adjective modifies everything to its left. First, where English strings adjectives with a comma, Italian inserts <em>e<\/em> when they are coordinate qualities of equal weight: <em>una persona seria ed onesta<\/em>.
