The latter term better explains their function\u2014they are &#8220;of service&#8221; to another verb, expressing an intention, possibility, necessity, or ability. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Compro una maglietta nuova. \u2013 <em>I&#8217;m buying a new t-shirt.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Voglio comprare una maglietta nuova. &#8211; <em>I want to buy a new t-shirt.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first case, I simply buy a t-shirt now. In the second, the verb <em>comprare<\/em> is &#8220;helped&#8221; by <em>volere<\/em> to say &#8220;I want to buy a t-shirt.&#8221; It\u2019s the same concept as in English with the verb &#8220;want.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italian grammar structure is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(subject) + verbo servile + verb + (object)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that these four verbs are all <a href=\"https:\/\/dante-learning.com\/eng\/common-italian-irregular-verbs-presente-indicativo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">irregular verbs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Dovere<\/em>, <em>Potere<\/em>, and <em>Volere<\/em> are properly defined as modal verbs. <em>Sapere<\/em> behaves differently in the passato prossimo and other compound tenses and has a double meaning: to know (facts) and to be able to (do something).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Essere-or-Avere\">Essere or Avere?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Italian, as in English, verb tenses are divided into simple and compound forms. Simple tenses, such as the <em>presente<\/em>, consist of a single-word verb. For example,&nbsp;<em>Mangio<\/em>&nbsp;(I eat) is in the present tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compound tenses, like the&nbsp;<em>passato prossimo<\/em>, are formed with the auxiliary verb&nbsp;<em>essere<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>avere<\/em>, followed by the past participle of the main verb (ending in&nbsp;<em>-ato<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>-uto<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>-ito<\/em>). For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(Io)&nbsp;<em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ho<\/span><\/strong> studiato<\/em>. (I studied) uses&nbsp;<em>avere<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Io) <em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sono<\/span><\/strong> andato<\/em>.&nbsp;(I went) uses&nbsp;<em>essere<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">When using modal verbs<\/span><\/strong> (dovere, potere, volere) with compound tenses like the passato prossimo, the situation becomes more complex because we add a third verb to the mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The choice of auxiliary verb (essere or avere) depends on the main verb, not the modal verb.&nbsp;For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ho dovuto <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">studiare<\/span><\/strong>. (I had to study.) &#8211; uses &#8220;avere&#8221; because &#8220;studiare&#8221; typically uses &#8220;avere&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sono dovut<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">andare<\/span><\/strong>. (I had to go.) &#8211; uses &#8220;essere&#8221; because &#8220;andare&#8221; typically uses &#8220;essere&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the second example, we see that the subject is a female and the feminine ending applies to the modal verb (dovuta). As you know, when you studied the passato prossimo, whenever we have essere, we need to apply a gender to the verb and make it masculine, feminine, singular or plural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Rule of thumb: To determine which auxiliary to use, consider what the auxiliary would be if the sentence didn&#8217;t include the modal verb.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples with different modal verbs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hai potuto mangiare? (Were you able to eat?) &#8211; uses &#8220;avere&#8221; because &#8220;mangiare&#8221; uses &#8220;avere&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Siete potuti venire? (Were you able to come?) &#8211; uses &#8220;essere&#8221; because &#8220;venire&#8221; uses &#8220;essere&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ho voluto comprare un libro. (I wanted to buy a book.) &#8211; uses &#8220;avere&#8221; because &#8220;comprare&#8221; uses &#8220;avere&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sono voluto partire presto. (I wanted to leave early.) &#8211; uses &#8220;essere&#8221; because &#8220;partire&#8221; uses &#8220;essere&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Omitting the main verb: If the main verb is omitted and only the modal verb is used, &#8220;avere&#8221; is always used as the auxiliary.&nbsp;For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ho dovuto. (I had to.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, with Italian modal verbs in the passato prossimo, we have three verbs: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>essere\/avere + verbo servile + main verb.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Ieri <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ho dovuto lavorare<\/span><\/strong> molto <\/em>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An easy trick to identify essere or avere as the correct verb is to use the question &#8220;che cosa?&#8221; (&#8220;what?&#8221;) with the verb. <em>STUDIARE<\/em> (che cosa? la matematica), <em>MANGIARE<\/em> (che cosa? i tortellini). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can answer the question, the verb supports a direct object (called a <em>verbo transitivo<\/em>) and uses <em>avere<\/em>. Otherwise, use <em>essere<\/em>. This works in most cases, not all, but it&#8217;s a simple intuitive rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <em>Sapere<\/em>, we mostly use <em>avere<\/em> with the passato prossimo and other compound tenses, or tend to express the concept of &#8220;I was able to&#8221; with &#8220;potere&#8221; or other set phrases. That&#8217;s why &#8220;sapere&#8221; is not considered a fully functioning modal verb and is often times excluded in grammar books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"audio\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let&#8217;s check the details and use of Italian modal verbs. Listen to the audio and repeat to improve comprehension and pronunciation.<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We will write examples for each <em>verbo servile<\/em>, with presente indicativo on the left and passato prossimo on the right, using a mix of verbs that take <em>essere<\/em> or <em>avere<\/em>.
