Italians often add a detail right after: <em>mi sento male, ho la febbre<\/em>; <em>non sto bene, ho mal di testa da stamattina<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Non sto bene.<br><em>I am not well.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mi sento male.<br><em>I feel sick.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ho bisogno di un medico.<br><em>I need a doctor.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mio figlio sta male.<br><em>My son is sick.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Sono molto stanca oggi.<br><em>I am very tired today.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the pair <em>stare<\/em> and <em>sentirsi<\/em>. <em>Stare<\/em> is the standard verb for how you are in general: <em>sto bene<\/em>, <em>sto male<\/em>, <em>come sta?<\/em>. <em>Sentirsi<\/em> is reflexive and points to a feeling in this moment: <em>mi sento bene<\/em>, <em>mi sento debole<\/em>. In <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em> they are almost interchangeable for everyday use, and you will hear both at the doctor&#8217;s office. The plural is feminine when you mean the pair or set of body parts. <em>La mano<\/em> is also irregular: feminine despite ending in <em>-o<\/em>, plural <em>le mani<\/em>. Say <em>mi fa male la testa<\/em>, not &#8220;mi fa male mia testa&#8221;. Say <em>ho le mani fredde<\/em>, not &#8220;ho mie mani fredde&#8221;. The article carries the meaning of &#8220;my&#8221; when ownership is obvious.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mal-di\">Ho mal di vs mi fa male<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the single most useful pair of patterns in basic <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em>: <em>ho mal di<\/em> + body part, and <em>mi fa male<\/em> + article + body part. Both mean &#8220;something hurts&#8221;. You will hear them every day in any pharmacy in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ho mal di<\/strong> works with a short list of common conditions and uses no article in between: <em>ho mal di testa<\/em>, <em>ho mal di gola<\/em>, <em>ho mal di pancia<\/em>, <em>ho mal di stomaco<\/em>, <em>ho mal di denti<\/em>, <em>ho mal di schiena<\/em>, <em>ho mal di orecchie<\/em>, <em>ho mal di piedi<\/em>. These are fixed expressions, almost compound nouns, and they cover most everyday aches.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ho mal di testa da stamattina.<br><em>I have had a headache since this morning.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ho mal di gola e un po&#8217; di tosse.<br><em>I have a sore throat and a bit of a cough.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mio figlio ha mal di pancia.<br><em>My son has a stomachache.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ho mal di denti, devo andare dal dentista.<br><em>I have a toothache, I have to go to the dentist.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mi fa male<\/strong> + article + body part is the more flexible pattern. You can use it with any part of the body, and the verb agrees with what hurts: singular <em>mi fa male<\/em>, plural <em>mi fanno male<\/em>. So <em>mi fa male la mano destra<\/em> (one hand), but <em>mi fanno male le gambe<\/em> (both legs). As a rule of thumb: for the classic aches (head, throat, belly, stomach, teeth, back, ears, feet) <em>ho mal di<\/em> is shorter and more native. This is one of the most useful little patterns in <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em>, because every consultation starts with the same question: <em>da quanto tempo?<\/em>. Practising the <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em> for time markers alongside symptoms will save you constant hesitation at the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"farmacia\">At the farmacia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Italy a <em>farmacia<\/em> is more than a shop: the pharmacist is a trained professional who can give advice on minor problems, recommend an over-the-counter remedy, measure blood pressure, and tell you when you should see a doctor instead. You spot a pharmacy by the green cross outside, and every neighbourhood has a <em>farmacia di turno<\/em>, the one on duty after hours. It softens the request and signals that you are not in a hurry. <em>Mi serve<\/em> (&#8220;I need&#8221;) is the more direct version, also common, also polite. Both are part of the core <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em> for any over-the-counter exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antibiotics, sleeping pills, and most prescription drugs require a <em>ricetta medica<\/em>, the doctor&#8217;s prescription. Pain relievers like <em>tachipirina<\/em> (paracetamol) and <em>aspirina<\/em>, cough syrups, and basic remedies for cold and flu are sold without a prescription. If you are not sure, just ask: <em>serve la ricetta?<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"medico\">At the doctor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italians use two words for &#8220;doctor&#8221;. <em>Medico<\/em> names the profession; <em>dottore<\/em> (or <em>dottoressa<\/em>, feminine) is the title you use when you address the person directly. So you say <em>vado dal medico<\/em> (&#8220;I&#8217;m going to the doctor&#8221;) but <em>buongiorno, dottore<\/em> when you greet them. Both belong to standard <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The preposition <em>da<\/em> + person means &#8220;to \/ at someone&#8217;s place&#8221;. <em>Vado dal medico<\/em> = &#8220;I&#8217;m going to the doctor&#8217;s&#8221;; <em>vado dal dentista<\/em> = &#8220;I&#8217;m going to the dentist&#8217;s&#8221;. These three words are the backbone of <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em> at any clinic. Once you know them, the rest of the <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em> for appointments and tests slots into place quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"medicines\">Medicines and remedies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The names of common medicines look reassuringly similar to English, and the basic <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em> for remedies is short. Simple, frequent, central to <em>italian health vocabulary<\/em>.
