Every italian house type has its own label. A tall italian house with a row of buzzers is a palazzo or condominio; the single unit you ring is an appartamento. A two-storey house on the outskirts with a small garden is a villetta; if it shares a wall with the neighbour, it is a villetta a schiera. In the countryside around Lucca you see casali (stone farmhouses) and cascine in the north; in old hill towns there are case a corte built around a courtyard.

Federica abita in un palazzo del centro storico di Verona.
Federica lives in a building in the historic centre of Verona.

Pietro e Caterina hanno comprato una villetta a schiera fuori Modena.
Pietro and Caterina bought a terraced house just outside Modena.

Mio nonno vive ancora nel casale di famiglia, in campagna.
My grandfather still lives in the family farmhouse, in the countryside.

L’appartamento di Martina è al terzo piano, senza ascensore.
Martina’s apartment is on the third floor, with no lift.

One word does double duty and confuses learners early: casa. It means both “house” (the building) and “home” (the place you live), and it is the most useful word in this whole guide. La mia casa can be your detached villa, your top-floor appartamento, or the studio you rent: from the inside, they are all casa. When you say vado a casa you mean “I’m going home”, and the construction works the same whether home is a castle or a single room. The italian house vocabulary you actually use day-to-day starts from this one flexible word and branches outward.

The rooms: stanza, camera, locale

Italian has three words for “room” inside an italian house, and they are not interchangeable, even though dictionaries treat them as synonyms. The everyday word in a private italian house is stanza. Camera is the same idea, but most native speakers reach for camera when they mean camera da letto (bedroom) or a hotel room. So an Italian friend giving you a tour will say questa è la stanza dei bambini, but a hotel receptionist will say la sua camera è al secondo piano.

L’appartamento ha quattro stanze più il bagno.
The apartment has four rooms plus the bathroom.

La camera dei nostri figli dà sul cortile.
Our children’s bedroom looks out onto the courtyard.

Vorrei una camera doppia con vista per due notti.
I’d like a double room with a view for two nights.

The third word is locale, and you will only meet it in real-estate language. An agency in Bologna will describe a flat as trilocale al secondo piano: three rooms, not counting the bathroom or kitchen if the kitchen is just a corner of the living room. Locale is technical, neutral, and never used at home. If you said oggi ho pulito tutti i locali, an Italian friend would understand but find it odd, like saying “I cleaned all the units of my dwelling” in English. Save locale for listings.

🔍 Quick test. If you can swap the word for “bedroom” without changing the meaning, you probably want camera. If you mean any room in a private home, use stanza. If you are reading or writing a property listing, switch to locale. Three contexts, three defaults: that is the working core of italian house vocabulary on this point.

The five everyday rooms

Most flats in an italian house are built around the same five rooms. Learn these five names with their articles and you can describe any italian house in two or three sentences. Notice that cucina, camera, sala are all feminine, while soggiorno, bagno, ingresso, corridoio are masculine. The article changes accordingly: la cucina, il bagno.

La cucina: the kitchen. Often the centre of family life.
In Italy the kitchen is often where guests sit too, not just the cooks.

Il soggiorno: the everyday living room.
The casual room where the family relaxes, watches TV, hosts close friends.

La camera da letto: the bedroom.
Often shortened to la camera or la stanza in casual speech.

Il bagno: the bathroom.
One word for both the toilet and the shower room; most flats have one or two.

L’ingresso: the entrance hall.
The small area by the front door where you leave keys, jackets, and shoes.

Three more italian house rooms show up often enough to be worth learning now. La sala da pranzo is the dining room, kept for big meals and Sunday lunches in larger flats. Il corridoio is the hallway that connects the rooms; you will hear in fondo al corridoio, “at the end of the hall”. Il balcone is the balcony, and most Italian flats have at least one: it doubles as drying space (with the stendino), smoking corner, and a place for a few plants. In a top-floor apartment the bedroom under the sloping roof is a mansarda, often the most charming room in the building.

La cucina di Camilla è piccola ma molto luminosa.
Camilla’s kitchen is small but very bright.

Il bagno è in fondo al corridoio, sulla destra.
The bathroom is at the end of the hallway, on the right.

Federica ha messo le piante sul balcone.
Federica put the plants out on the balcony.

Lorenzo dorme in mansarda perché preferisce il soffitto basso.
Lorenzo sleeps in the attic room because he prefers the low ceiling.

Below ground or downstairs, two more italian house spaces complete the picture. La cantina is the cellar, a small private storage room in the basement of every condominio, where Italians keep wine, bicycles, suitcases, and Christmas decorations. Il garage or il box is the garage, which in the south is often called posto auto. These are not glamorous rooms, but they appear constantly in conversations about flats: l’appartamento ha la cantina? is a standard question when you visit a place to rent.

🎯 Mini-task #1. Add the right article (il, lo, la, l’) in front of each room name.

___ cucina

___ soggiorno

___ bagno

___ ingresso

___ camera da letto

___ corridoio

___ mansarda

___ balcone

<details>
👉 Show answers

1. la cucina · 2. il soggiorno · 3. il bagno · 4. l’ingresso · 5. la camera da letto · 6. il corridoio · 7. la mansarda · 8. il balcone

</details>

Furniture and everyday objects

The general word for furniture in an italian house is i mobili (plural), and the verb for furnishing a place is arredare. A flat that comes with furniture is ammobiliato or arredato; an empty one is non arredato. The italian house vocabulary for objects is huge, but a working A2 set fits in twenty words, grouped by room of the italian house.

Room

Key furniture / objects

soggiorno

Notice the order Italian uses when an adjective follows: un divano nuovo, un tavolo grande, una lampada moderna. The adjective normally goes after the noun, and that postposed position is what marks an apartment as luminoso (bright) or silenzioso (quiet) in a listing. With a few common adjectives (bello, buono, grande, piccolo, nuovo) the order can flip: una bella casa sounds warmer than una casa bella, which would imply you are picking it out from a row of houses. For A2, postposed is your safe default.

Abbiamo comprato un divano nuovo per il soggiorno.
We bought a new sofa for the living room.

L’armadio della camera è troppo piccolo per due persone.
The wardrobe in the bedroom is too small for two people.

Il frigorifero della cucina non funziona da ieri.
The kitchen fridge has not been working since yesterday.

Caterina ha messo uno specchio grande sopra il lavandino del bagno.
Caterina put a big mirror above the bathroom sink.

One small word does a lot of work in this area: sopra (on, on top of), sotto (under), accanto a (next to), vicino a (close to), davanti a (in front of), dietro (behind). With italian house vocabulary you spend most of your time placing objects in relation to each other, so these prepositional phrases are worth practising on your own room. Il libro è sul comodino, accanto alla lampada: one sentence, two prepositions, and you are at A2.

Reading a real-estate ad

Italian property listings for any italian house have their own compressed dialect. Once you learn the six or seven labels, you can browse idealista.it or immobiliare.it like a native. The first labels you meet are the room counts: monolocale, bilocale, trilocale, quadrilocale. A monolocale is a studio (one room plus a separate bathroom). A bilocale is two rooms, typically a bedroom and a living room. A trilocale is three rooms; if one of them is a study, the flat may still have only one bedroom. The bathroom is never counted as a room.

Affittasi bilocale arredato in zona università, 700 euro al mese.
Furnished two-room flat for rent near the university, 700 euros a month.

Vendesi trilocale luminoso, terzo piano con ascensore, doppi servizi.
Bright three-room flat for sale, third floor with lift, two bathrooms.

Monolocale ristrutturato in centro storico, ideale per studenti.
Renovated studio in the historic centre, ideal for students.

The rest of the listing vocabulary is short and worth memorising. Affittasi = for rent, vendesi = for sale (both are old grammatical forms still alive in ads). Piano = floor (primo piano, secondo piano, piano terra for ground floor). Ascensore = lift. Riscaldamento autonomo = independent heating (good news: you control the bill). Spese condominiali = building fees. Doppi servizi = two bathrooms. Ristrutturato = renovated. Da ristrutturare = needing work. Ammobiliato or arredato = furnished. Posto auto = parking spot.

One last detail that surprises learners: square metres. Italians measure flats in metri quadri, abbreviated mq or m². A typical Padova bilocale runs 55 to 70 mq; a generous trilocale starts at 90 mq. When a friend asks quanti metri è la vostra casa?, they mean square metres, not the height of the rooms. The italian house vocabulary in listings is compact, but once you decode it you can compare ten flats in five minutes.

🎯 Mini-task #2. Match each ad term with the meaning.

affittasi: a) for sale, b) for rent

bilocale: a) bathroom, b) two-room flat

piano terra: a) ground floor, b) top floor

doppi servizi: a) two bathrooms, b) two parking spots

da ristrutturare: a) renovated, b) needs work

spese condominiali: a) heating bill, b) building fees

<details>
👉 Show answers

1. b: for rent · 2. b: two-room flat · 3. a: ground floor · 4. a: two bathrooms · 5. b: needs work · 6. b: building fees (paid monthly to the condominio)

</details>

A casa, in casa, da casa: the prepositions

The word casa, the heart of every italian house description, is the one Italian noun A2 learners trip over because of its preposition behaviour. With casa meaning “home”, Italian usually drops the article: vado a casa, sono a casa, esco di casa. Compare this with other places (vado al mercato, vado all’ufficio): there the article stays. The shorter form survives because casa is felt as a destination type, not a specific building, in these stock phrases.

Stasera resto a casa, sono stanco.
Tonight I’m staying home, I’m tired.

Sei in casa o sei uscito?
Are you in (the house) or have you gone out?

Esco di casa alle sette ogni mattina.
I leave the house at seven every morning.

Lavoro da casa due giorni a settimana.
I work from home two days a week.

The article comes back the moment you specify whose home: vado alla casa di Pietro works, but in real conversation Italians prefer vado da Pietro, “I’m going to Pietro’s place”. The construction da + person is the natural way to say “to someone’s home” or “at someone’s home”, and it works with names, professions, and pronouns: vado dal dentista, vieni da me?, siamo stati da Camilla. A2 is the right moment to add this to your italian house vocabulary, because it replaces a clumsy literal translation with one tiny word.

One pronunciation note. When you say a casa, Italian speakers in most regions double the c: it sounds like akkkasa. This is called raddoppiamento fonosintattico, and the same thing happens after a few other short words (a, e, è, da, ho, ha, ho). You do not have to do it perfectly at A2, but it is useful to know that the sound you hear is not a mistake: it is the standard pronunciation of one of the most common phrases in Italian.

Casa dolce casa and other home expressions

A handful of expressions built on casa turn your italian house vocabulary into living Italian. These idioms come up in conversation about any italian house, from a Lucca bilocale to a Padova villetta. They are short, idiomatic, and used in conversation every day. Learn the four below and you can react naturally to most “home” situations.

Casa dolce casa: the exact equivalent of “home sweet home”. Italians say it (often with a smile) when they walk back through their own front door after a long day or a trip.

Sentirsi a casa: “to feel at home”. You say it when a friend’s flat or a place you visit makes you comfortable: nel tuo appartamento mi sento a casa.

Essere di casa: “to be like one of the family”. You are di casa somewhere when you go there so often that you no longer feel like a guest: al bar sotto l’ufficio sono ormai di casa.

Fare gli onori di casa: “to play host”, literally “to do the honours of the house”. The host welcomes you, offers something to drink, gives the tour.

Two more phrases appear constantly. Fa’ come a casa tua (“make yourself at home”) is what a friend says the moment you cross the threshold; questa casa non è un albergo is what an Italian mother says to a teenager who wanders in and out at all hours. Both belong to the warm, slightly humorous register that surrounds the concept of casa in Italy. Fix them and your sentences sound natural.

Mistake 1. Saying vado alla casa for “I’m going home”. Wrong because casa as “home” drops the article: the natural form is vado a casa. Use vado a casa di Pietro only if you really need to specify whose; in conversation Italians prefer the shorter vado da Pietro.

Mistake 2. Using camera for any room. Wrong because camera alone defaults to “bedroom” in private homes, and to “hotel room” in hospitality. If you say l’appartamento ha cinque camere, Italians hear “five bedrooms”, which is enormous. For total rooms say cinque stanze, or cinque locali in a listing.

Mistake 3. Counting the bathroom as a room in a real-estate ad. Wrong because Italian listings count only main rooms: bilocale = two rooms plus bathroom. If a flat is advertised as trilocale, expect three main rooms and one or two bathrooms. The label doppi servizi tells you there are two bathrooms; servizio alone means one.

Dialog: visiting an apartment in Lucca

Margherita is visiting a bilocale in Lucca with a real-estate agent. Answers draw on real classroom conversations and on the Treccani entry for casa, which lists the construction a casa without article among its most common patterns.

What does casa dolce casa mean?

Casa dolce casa is the exact Italian equivalent of home sweet home. It is what Italians say (often with a small smile) when they walk back through their own front door after a trip or a long day. The literal translation is sweet home sweet, but the meaning and register match the English expression one to one. You can use it on its own as an exclamation, or as the closing line of a message announcing you are back: finalmente in Italia, casa dolce casa.

What is the difference between stanza and camera?

Stanza and camera are both translated as room, but native usage splits them. Stanza is the neutral everyday word for any room in a private home: la stanza dei bambini, una stanza grande. Camera, used alone, is often short for camera da letto (bedroom) in a home, and means hotel room in hospitality. So an apartment of cinque stanze has five total rooms, while one of cinque camere would sound enormous because it implies five bedrooms. Real-estate listings use a third word, locale, which counts the main rooms (kitchen and living often together, bathroom never).

What is a monolocale, bilocale, trilocale?

These are the standard Italian labels for apartment size, counted by main rooms (the bathroom is never counted). A monolocale is a studio: one room with a kitchen corner plus a separate bathroom. A bilocale is two rooms, typically a bedroom and a living room with kitchen. A trilocale is three rooms; if one of them is a study or second living area, the flat may still have only one bedroom. A quadrilocale has four rooms. The label tells you the size; the room count for sleeping depends on how the rooms are used.

Do I say vado a casa or vado alla casa?

For going home, Italian drops the article: the natural form is vado a casa, sono a casa, esco di casa, lavoro da casa. The article comes back only when you specify whose home: vado alla casa di Pietro is grammatical but unusual; in real conversation Italians prefer the shorter vado da Pietro, where da + person means at or to someone’s place. Treat a casa, in casa, da casa as fixed phrases without article.

What is the difference between soggiorno and salotto?

In most modern Italian flats the two words refer to the same room: the everyday living room. Soggiorno is the now-dominant term and the one you will hear most often. Salotto is slightly older and slightly more formal, traditionally a reception room reserved for guests, more separate from family life. In a small apartment the distinction collapses and people say soggiorno for everything; in a larger house with two living rooms, the casual one is the soggiorno and the formal one is the salotto. For A2, use soggiorno as your default.

How do I say I feel at home in Italian?

Use sentirsi a casa: mi sento a casa, ti senti a casa, ci sentiamo a casa. The reflexive verb sentirsi pairs with the fixed phrase a casa to convey the feeling, not the location. A related expression is essere di casa, which means to be so familiar somewhere that you are treated like family: al bar sotto l’ufficio sono di casa. To welcome a guest, the host says fa come a casa tua, make yourself at home, and may add ti faccio fare il giro, I’ll show you around. All four phrases belong to the warm everyday register around the word casa.

Related guides

Three guides that build on italian house vocabulary and deepen any italian house topic, plus an institutional reference on the word casa.

Italian Vado da: how to say “at someone’s place”: the shortest way to talk about going to a friend’s home.

Italian Simple Prepositions: a, in, da and the rest, the small words that govern a casa, in casa, da casa.

Italian Raddoppiamento Fonosintattico: why a casa sounds like akkkasa in native speech.

Treccani: casa: institutional dictionary entry with the full range of meanings and fixed expressions.

Learn italian house vocabulary at A2: types of homes, the five rooms, furniture, real-estate ads, prepositions with casa, idioms, dialog and FAQ.

[1864
324,334,329,330,335,333,1081,326,327,331,332,328,325
post-3728","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-a2","tag-appartamento","tag-balcone","tag-camera","tag-camera-da-letto","tag-cantina","tag-cortile","tag-cucina","tag-ingresso","tag-mansarda","tag-sala-da-pranzo","tag-soggiorno","tag-stanza","tag-viletta-a-schira","no-featured-image-padding","pmpro-has-access
["GET
