Few italian filler words are as flexible as <em>ecco<\/em>: it can be a whole answer by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"comunque\">Comunque, niente: moving on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two italian filler words handle the change of subject. <em>Comunque<\/em> means &#8220;anyway \/ however&#8221; and drags the talk back on track. Spoken <em>niente<\/em> (literally &#8220;nothing&#8221;) is the very colloquial &#8220;anyway, so&#8221; that closes a digression.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Comunque, ci vediamo domani per il resto.<\/em><br>Anyway, we&#8217;ll see each other tomorrow for the rest.<\/li>\n<li><em>Niente, alla fine ho deciso di non andarci.<\/em><br>Anyway, in the end I decided not to go.<\/li>\n<li><em>Comunque la pensi, la scadenza \u00e8 venerd\u00ec.<\/em><br>However you see it, the deadline is Friday. (full conjunction use)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>The filler <em>niente<\/em> is purely spoken and very informal: it has nothing to do with the negative &#8220;nothing&#8221; here. Of the everyday italian filler words it is the clearest sign you are listening to relaxed, real speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"connectors\">Linking what you say<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A larger family of italian filler words connects ideas across sentences. (closing with agreement)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>These check-words are the conversational equivalent of eye contact. <em>No?<\/em> and <em>eh?<\/em> are the lightest, <em>capito?<\/em> and <em>hai presente?<\/em> the most explicit. Northern speakers also use <em>neh?<\/em> for the same job. Used on a loop, they become <em>intercalari fastidiosi<\/em>, verbal tics that signal nervousness or poor planning. The usual offenders are <em>cio\u00e8<\/em>, <em>diciamo<\/em>, <em>praticamente<\/em> and <em>nel senso<\/em>, dropped into every gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advice is not to avoid them, that would sound robotic, but to vary them and to leave some pauses silent. A speaker who says <em>cio\u00e8<\/em> every five words is not communicating more; the most polished speakers use italian filler words sparingly and deliberately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It helps to understand why the tic appears at all. In spontaneous, unmonitored speech the brain plans the next clause while the mouth is still finishing the current one, and a filler buys that fraction of a second.
