Same letter-trigger rules (s+cons, z, vowels), same agreement.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"adj-vs-pron\">Adjective vs pronoun: same word, different job<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The same demonstrative word can act as an adjective (with a noun) or as a pronoun (replacing a noun). This compresses <em>quel mobile antico<\/em> into <em>quello antico<\/em> when the noun is already understood from context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cio\">Ci\u00f2: the neutral catch-all pronoun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The pronoun <em>ci\u00f2<\/em> is a neutral demonstrative that means &#8220;this thing&#8221; or &#8220;that thing&#8221; without specifying gender. It refers to an abstract idea, a previous statement, or a whole situation. Both refer only to male humans in formal subject position; you will meet them in essays, biographies, and history books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sto\">Sto: the colloquial shortcut of questo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In informal speech Italians shorten <em>questo<\/em> to <em>&#8216;sto<\/em> (with apostrophe), and the same for <em>questi \u2192 &#8216;sti<\/em>, <em>questa \u2192 &#8216;sta<\/em>, <em>queste \u2192 &#8216;ste<\/em>. This shortcut is everywhere in conversation but rare in writing.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Non mi piace <strong>&#8216;sta<\/strong> macchina di Francesco, \u00e8 troppo grande per le strade di Lucca.<br><em>I don&#8217;t like this car of Francesco&#8217;s, it&#8217;s too big for the streets of Lucca.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8216;Sti<\/strong> clienti aspettano in coda da mezz&#8217;ora, sbrigatevi.<br><em>These customers have been waiting in line for half an hour, hurry up.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Cosa vuoi che ti dica, <strong>&#8216;sto<\/strong> film non mi \u00e8 piaciuto per niente.<br><em>What do you want me to say, this film didn&#8217;t appeal to me at all.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>The shortcut also lives in frozen time expressions that everyone uses, even in formal contexts: <em>stamattina<\/em> (this morning), <em>stasera<\/em> (this evening), <em>stanotte<\/em> (last night, tonight), <em>stavolta<\/em> (this time). These are not really demonstrative variants anymore; they are single fused words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"codesto\">Codesto: the forgotten Tuscan third option<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Italian once had a three-way demonstrative system: <em>questo<\/em> (near speaker), <em>codesto<\/em> (near listener), <em>quello<\/em> (far from both). Modern standard Italian dropped <em>codesto<\/em>, except in Tuscan dialect and in bureaucratic language. Same rules as <em>lo<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mistake 2.<\/strong> Confusing adjective <em>quello<\/em> with pronoun <em>quello<\/em>. The pronoun keeps the full form regardless of what follows: <em>quello rosso, quelli antichi, quella nuova<\/em>. Wrong: <em>quel rosso<\/em>. Correct: <em>quello rosso<\/em>.
