The same logic gives <em>una citt\u00e0 sulla collina<\/em> (a town on a hill, perched on top), <em>una baita sulle Alpi<\/em> (a chalet in the Alps).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trap 2: &#8220;sui trent&#8217;anni&#8221; for approximate age<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To say someone is approximately a certain age, Italian uses SU plus the contracted article: <em>\u00e8 sui trenta, sui quaranta, sui cinquanta<\/em>. The construction always uses the plural article <em>sui<\/em> because the underlying noun is <em>anni<\/em> (years, masculine plural). For a woman in her forties: <em>\u00e8 sulla quarantina<\/em> (with the abstract noun <em>quarantina<\/em>, feminine singular). Both forms are interchangeable; the second is slightly more refined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trap 3: &#8220;ho letto sul giornale&#8221; not &#8220;nel giornale&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For information found in newspapers, magazines, websites, Italians use SU, not IN. <em>Ho letto un articolo sul Corriere<\/em> (I read an article in the Corriere); <em>l&#8217;ho visto su Instagram<\/em> (I saw it on Instagram); <em>c&#8217;\u00e8 scritto sul cartello<\/em> (it&#8217;s written on the sign). The logic is &#8220;on the surface of the page or screen&#8221;. English speakers default to &#8220;in&#8221;, which is grammatically possible but sounds odd to native ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trap 4: &#8220;uno su quattro&#8221; not &#8220;uno di quattro&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For partitive ratios, SU is the only correct preposition: <em>uno studente su quattro, due volte su tre, nove italiani su dieci<\/em>. English &#8220;one of four&#8221; tempts <em>uno di quattro<\/em>, which is wrong in this context (DI works for partitives like &#8220;one of us, one of them&#8221;: <em>uno di noi<\/em>). The rule: SU for ratios with a denominator, DI for partitives of a defined group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trap 5: &#8220;sul punto di&#8221; not &#8220;punto di&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To say &#8220;about to do something&#8221;, Italian uses <em>essere sul punto di + infinitive<\/em> or <em>stare per + infinitive<\/em>. <em>Ero sul punto di uscire<\/em> = I was about to leave. <em>Stavo per uscire<\/em> = same thing, slightly more colloquial. Don&#8217;t drop the SU: <em>ero punto di uscire<\/em> is wrong.
