DA covers origin (vengo da Trieste), duration up to now (studio italiano da due anni), location at someone’s place or business (vado dal medico, ceniamo da Marco), purpose (occhiali da sole, qualcosa da mangiare), description (un uomo dai capelli grigi), agent in passive sentences (scritto da Dante), and a cluster of idioms that catch beginners off guard (da solo, da capo, d’ora in avanti, dalla padella alla brace). This A2 guide walks through every role DA plays, with original examples, the five traps English speakers fall into, an evening dialogue at the dentist in Padua, a cheat sheet, a collapsible mini-challenge, and a quiz.

Cosa impareremo oggi

👆🏻 Jump to section

The rule: italian preposition DA in one line

Six core uses: origin, duration, place, purpose, description, agent

Extended uses: cause, value, role, as a child, articulated DA

Twelve idioms with DA

Five traps for English speakers

Cheat sheet

Dialogue at the dentist in Padua

Frequently asked questions

The rule: italian preposition DA in one line

The italian preposition DA marks a starting point. That starting point can be physical (where you come from), temporal (when something started), social (whose place you are visiting), functional (what an object is for), or causal (the agent who performed an action). The English equivalents shift accordingly: from, since, for, at, by, to. The constant is the idea of a source.

DA contracts with the definite article: da + il = dal, da + la = dalla, da + lo = dallo, da + i = dai, da + le = dalle, da + gli = dagli, da + l’ = dall’. With essere the preposition switches to DI (sono di Trieste). The DI vs DA guide covers the split in detail.

🔍 Observe:

Veniamo da un piccolo paese in Trentino. We come from a small village in Trentino.

Il treno parte da Roma Termini alle 6:45. The train leaves from Roma Termini at 6:45.

Sono appena tornata dall’aeroporto. I have just come back from the airport.

Use 2: Duration (since, for)

To say how long something has been going on, italian uses the present tense plus DA. English uses the present perfect (have been studying); italian uses the simple present (studio) and lets DA do the work.

🔍 Observe:

Studio italiano da tre anni. I have been studying Italian for three years.

Lavoro a Bologna dal 2020. I have been working in Bologna since 2020.

Aspettiamo l’autobus da mezz’ora. We have been waiting for the bus for half an hour.

Use 3: At someone’s place or business

This is the famous “chez” use. With a person’s name or a profession, DA means at their home, office, or shop. Italian uses the simple present: studio da tre anni. Translating ho studiato da tre anni sounds wrong because it shifts the action into the completed past.

Trap 2: at the doctor uses DA, not A

Italian says vado dal medico, not vado al medico. The location of the doctor (their office) is treated as a personal place, hence DA. Al medico is reserved for the indirect object: ho parlato al medico.

Trap 3: agent in passive is always DA, never DI

Scritto da Dante = written by Dante (agent). Scritto di Dante would mean Dante’s writing (possession). The two are different and not interchangeable.

Trap 4: purpose with infinitive uses DA, not PER

Qualcosa da mangiare, not qualcosa per mangiare. With a noun + DA + infinitive, italian fixes the relationship as functional. PER is reserved for finality of an action: esco per fare la spesa.

Trap 5: origin split between essere DI and venire DA

The same trap as DI but viewed from the DA side. Sono di Trieste = I am from Trieste (identity). Vengo da Trieste = I come from Trieste (motion).
