It marks possession (la macchina di Marco), origin (sono di Milano), material (una borsa di pelle), topic (parlare di politica), time of day (di sera), specification (un libro di storia), comparison (più alto di me), cause (tremare di freddo), manner (di corsa), partitive (del pane), and links dozens of verbs and adjectives to their complement (cercare di, pieno di). On top of that DI builds a dense layer of fixed idioms that natives drop without thinking: di punto in bianco, di gran lunga, di nuovo, di nascosto. This A2 guide walks through every job DI does, with original examples, the five traps English speakers fall into, an enoteca dialogue in Verona, a cheat sheet, a collapsible mini-challenge, and a quiz.

Cosa impareremo oggi

👆🏻 Jump to section

The rule: italian preposition DI in one line

Six core uses: possession, origin, material, topic, time, specification

Six extended uses: quantity, comparison, cause, manner, partitive, articulated

Verbs and adjectives that take DI

Twelve idioms with DI

Five traps for English speakers

Cheat sheet

Dialogue at the enoteca in Verona

Frequently asked questions

The rule: italian preposition DI in one line

The italian preposition DI links two nouns or a verb and its complement to express belonging, origin, content, or any kind of specification. The default English equivalent is of, but DI also covers from (origin), about (topic), in (time of day), than (comparison), with (manner), and a long list of cases where English would use no preposition at all. The structure is rigid: noun + DI + noun, verb + DI + infinitive, adjective + DI + noun.

DI contracts with the definite article: di + il = del, di + la = della, di + lo = dello, di + i = dei, di + le = delle, di + gli = degli, di + l’ = dell’. The contracted forms are not optional. La casa di il professore is wrong; la casa del professore is right.

Six core uses: possession, origin, material, topic, time, specification

Use 1: Possession (whose)

DI builds the genitive: who owns what. English uses the apostrophe-s; italian uses DI plus the owner’s name or noun.

🔍 Observe:

La bicicletta di Sara è in cantina. Sara’s bicycle is in the cellar.

Il quaderno del ragazzo è sul banco. The boy’s notebook is on the desk.

Le chiavi della macchina sono sparite. The car keys have disappeared.

I libri dei nonni sono al primo piano. The grandparents’ books are on the first floor.

Use 2: Origin (where you are from)

To say where you come from with the verb essere, italian uses DI plus the city. With venire the preposition switches to DA: vengo da Roma. This split surprises English speakers, who use from in both cases.

🔍 Observe:

Sono di Trieste, ma vivo a Bologna da dieci anni. I am from Trieste, but I have lived in Bologna for ten years.

Mio padre è di un piccolo paese in provincia di Lecce. My father is from a small village near Lecce.

Tutti i miei colleghi sono di Milano o di Torino. All my colleagues are from Milan or Turin.

Use 3: Material (what something is made of)

DI introduces the material of an object. English usually uses made of or no preposition at all (a leather bag); italian always uses DI.

🔍 Observe:

Vorrei una giacca di lino. I would like a linen jacket.

Ha comprato una panchina di ferro per il giardino. He bought an iron bench for the garden.

Il pavimento della cucina è di marmo. The kitchen floor is marble.

Use 4: Topic (about what)

To say about after verbs of speaking, thinking, writing, italian uses DI. After parlare you can also use SU for a more academic flavour, but DI is the everyday choice.

🔍 Observe:

Non parliamo di politica a tavola, per favore. Let’s not talk about politics at the dinner table, please.

Marta ha scritto un articolo sulla Resistenza italiana (formal: SU). Marta wrote an article on the Italian Resistance.

Penso spesso al trasloco (here pensare A, not DI: pensare DI = consider doing something). I often think about the move.

Use 5: Time of day (when)

DI marks the part of the day or season as a habitual frame: di mattina, di pomeriggio, di sera, di notte, d’estate, d’inverno. English usually drops the preposition; italian keeps DI.

🔍 Observe:

Mi serve un dizionario di sinonimi. I need a thesaurus.

Stefano insegna in una scuola di musica. Stefano teaches at a music school.

Compro spesso ricette di cucina veneta. I often buy Venetian cooking recipes.

🎯 Mini-Challenge: six core uses

Sara’s bicycle is in the cellar.

I am from Trieste.

<details>

Show answers

La bicicletta di Sara è in cantina.

Sono di Trieste.

</details>

Six extended uses: quantity, comparison, cause, manner, partitive, articulated

Use 7: Quantity and measure

After a measure (litre, kilo, glass, slice, plate) DI links the container to its content. Many of these become idioms (see section below).

🔍 Observe:

Sono uscita di corsa, ho dimenticato l’ombrello. I rushed out, I forgot the umbrella.

Hanno mangiato di fretta e sono scappati al cinema. They ate quickly and ran off to the cinema.

I bambini ci hanno guardato di sbieco. The children gave us a sideways look.

Use 11: Partitive (some, any)

The articulated DI (del, della, dei, delle) plays the role of some or any: del pane = some bread, della frutta = some fruit. English often drops it; italian uses it especially in the singular for uncountables and in the plural for countables. Italian splits the work: sono di Napoli but vengo da Napoli. Mix the two and you sound off.

Trap 2: pensare DI vs pensare A

The two are not interchangeable. Penso a te = I think about you (focus, attention). Penso di partire domani = I am thinking of leaving tomorrow (intention). Switching the prepositions changes the sentence into something native ears reject.

Trap 3: parlare DI vs parlare A vs parlare CON

Three different jobs. Parlare di politica = talk about politics (topic). Parlare a Marco = talk to Marco (recipient, slightly formal). Parlare con Marco = chat with Marco (peer-to-peer, more frequent in conversation).
