The verb agrees with the thing (piace / piacciono), the compound tenses always take essere with participle agreement (mi è piaciuta), and nine more verbs copy the pattern (mancare, servire, bastare…). This B1-and-up guide takes italian piacere through every tense and mood, including the hard ones.

Most courses drill mi piace in the present and stop. That is the easy 20%. The other 80%, the part that actually trips up B1 and B2 learners, is italian piacere in the passato prossimo, the conditional, the subjunctive and reported speech. The shortcut holds for a few weeks, then it cracks: a student writes mi piace i libri, or lui si piace correre, and nothing agrees any more. The problem is that italian piacere is not the verb “to like” at all.

Italian has no direct verb for “to like”. What it has is piacere, which means roughly “to be pleasing”. The person who enjoys something is not the subject; the thing enjoyed is. Once you flip the sentence in your head, the pronouns, the agreement, the participle and the nine copycat verbs all fall into line.

🔍 The bridge. Before translating, rephrase the English as “X is pleasing to Y”. “I like wine” becomes “Wine is pleasing to me”, which slides straight into Mi piace il vino. The ugly rephrase is the whole trick behind italian piacere.

What you like is the subject

Put two sentences side by side and the flip in italian piacere becomes visible.

Mi piace la birra.
Beer is pleasing to me. (I like beer.)

Mi piacciono i libri gialli.
Crime novels are pleasing to me. (I like crime novels.)

In English, I is the subject and beer the object. In Italian it flips: la birra is the subject, mi (“to me”) is the indirect object. That single inversion is why the verb shifts from piace to piacciono: it agrees with the thing, not with you. Grammarians call piacere a “psych verb”, where the experiencer is not the subject.

Piace or piacciono?

In almost every real sentence you only need two forms of italian piacere: piace (singular subject) and piacciono (plural subject). You choose based on the thing liked.

Mi piace il silenzio della domenica mattina.
I like the Sunday-morning quiet.

Mi piacciono le giornate di vento al mare.
I like windy days at the seaside.

A Lucia piace camminare in collina.
Lucia likes walking in the hills. (subject = the infinitive, singular)

With one or more infinitives the verb stays singular: Le piace leggere e dipingere. The other persons exist too (tu mi piaci, “I like you”), and they obey the same logic: whoever is liked becomes the subject of italian piacere.

The indirect pronouns you need

The person who enjoys the thing appears as an indirect pronoun before italian piacere. Italian piacere lives in every tense and mood, and the hard part is the compound and subjunctive forms. One block per tense, with piacere and the verbs that copy it. With italian piacere the auxiliary never changes, always essere, so all your attention goes on the ending of piaciuto / piaciuta / piaciuti / piaciute and on which tense the situation needs.

Nine verbs that copy piacere

The good news about italian piacere: once you own it, nine more high-frequency verbs come free, because they use the identical flipped construction.

mancare (to be missing / to miss): Mi manca mia sorella.

servire (to be needed): Ti serve aiuto?

bastare (to be enough): Mi bastano cinque minuti.

occorrere (to be necessary): Ci occorre più tempo.

interessare (to be of interest): Non gli interessa la politica.

sembrare / parere (to seem): Mi sembra giusto.

restare (to be left): Mi restano due euro.

dispiacere (to be sorry / to mind): Ti dispiace se apro la finestra?

They all flip the same way and all take essere in the compound tenses, so the agreement you learned for italian piacere transfers wholesale: mi sono mancati, ci sarebbero serviti, non le è dispiaciuta.

Double-life verbs: restare, servire, parere

Three of the copycats are tricky because they live a double life. Used like italian piacere they take the flipped construction; used normally they are ordinary verbs with their own subject. Same verb, two grammars.

restare: flipped, “to be left” → Mi restano due giorni di ferie. · ordinary, “to stay” → Resto a casa stasera.

servire: flipped, “to be needed” → Ti serve una mano? · ordinary, “to serve” → Il cameriere serve il vino.

parere: flipped, “to seem to someone” → Mi pare giusto. · as a plain “to seem” → Pare stanco.

The clue is always the indirect pronoun. If you see mi, ti, gli, le, ci, vi in front, the verb is behaving like italian piacere and the noun after it is the subject; with no indirect pronoun it is the ordinary verb. Read mi resta poco tempo versus resto poco tempo and you hear two different grammars in the same word.

A me mi piace: the register trap

One nuance separates a fluent speaker from a careless one. In speech you will constantly hear a me mi piace, with the pronoun doubled.

Spoken, very common, dialectal: A me mi piace il mare.

Standard, written and formal: A me piace il mare. or simply Mi piace il mare.

The doubled form is normal in casual conversation across all Italian dialects, but it is judged incorrect in writing and formal Italian and is best avoided by learners. Recognise a me mi piace when you hear it; produce a me piace or mi piace. Getting this register line right is a B1-and-up marker with italian piacere.

Common mistakes English speakers make

Using avere in compound tenses: not mi ha piaciuto but mi è piaciuto.

Agreeing the verb with the person: not mi piaccio i libri but mi piacciono i libri.

Treating it as reflexive: not lui si piace correre but gli piace correre.

Dropping a before a named person: not Lorenzo piace il jazz but A Lorenzo piace il jazz.

Forgetting participle agreement: not le foto non mi è piaciuto but non mi sono piaciute.

Dialog: an enoteca in Lucca

Caterina and Lorenzo are tasting wine at an enoteca in Lucca. The answers below draw on classroom usage and on the Treccani entry verbi psicologici.

Why does Italian piacere work backwards compared to English?

Because piacere does not mean to like, it means to be pleasing. The thing enjoyed is the grammatical subject and the person is the indirect object: Mi piace il vino is literally Wine is pleasing to me. That single inversion explains the pronouns, the verb agreement and the participle. Grammar calls it a psych verb, where the experiencer is not the subject.

When do I use piace and when piacciono?

You match the verb to the thing liked, not to the person. One thing or an infinitive takes piace (mi piace il caffe, mi piace leggere); more than one thing takes piacciono (mi piacciono i libri). Two infinitives stay singular: le piace leggere e dipingere.

Is it mi e piaciuto or mi ha piaciuto?

Always essere: mi e piaciuto, never mi ha piaciuto.
