A type III protasi (irreal past) can pair with a type II apodosi (possible present) when the consequence still applies today: <em>Se avessi studiato medicina, ora sarei un medico<\/em>. The hypothesis is in the past (<em>avessi studiato<\/em> = trapassato congiuntivo) but the consequence reaches the present (<em>sarei<\/em> = condizionale presente). Italian forces you to mark it explicitly: <em>venisse<\/em> (congiuntivo imperfetto = simultaneous in the past) is different from <em>sarebbe venuto<\/em> (condizionale passato = future relative to a past moment).
