It splits into two registers. The informal imperative covers <em>tu<\/em> (singular you), <em>noi<\/em> (let&#8217;s), and <em>voi<\/em> (plural you). The formal imperative covers <em>Lei<\/em> (singular polite) and <em>Loro<\/em> (plural polite, rare today) and is built on the congiuntivo presente. Negative <em>tu<\/em> uses a different rule: <em>non<\/em> + infinitive (<em>non parlare!<\/em>, not <em>non parla!<\/em>). On top of the conjugations, italian imperative collides with object pronouns in two opposite ways: in informal imperative the pronoun attaches to the verb (<em>dammelo, prendilo<\/em>), while in formal imperative the pronoun stays separate (<em>me lo dia, lo prenda<\/em>). Two of them coincide with the indicative present (<em>noi<\/em> and <em>voi<\/em>); only <em>tu<\/em> has a dedicated form. For first-conjugation verbs ending in <em>-are<\/em>, the <em>tu<\/em> form ends in <em>-a<\/em> (<em>parla!<\/em>). The negative <em>tu<\/em> imperative does NOT use the imperative form. It uses <em>non<\/em> + the infinitive. <em>Parla<\/em> becomes <em>non parlare<\/em>, <em>prendi<\/em> becomes <em>non prendere<\/em>, <em>finisci<\/em> becomes <em>non finire<\/em>. The form ends in <em>-i<\/em> for first-conjugation verbs (<em>parli!<\/em>) and in <em>-a<\/em> for second and third-conjugation (<em>prenda!, dorma!, finisca!<\/em>). Five of them have a short, monosyllabic form ending in apostrophe: <em>va&#8217;, da&#8217;, di&#8217;, fa&#8217;, sta&#8217;<\/em>. With <em>tu<\/em>, <em>noi<\/em>, <em>voi<\/em>, the pronoun attaches to the end of the verb forming a single word: <em>dimmi, prendilo, andiamoci, ditelo<\/em>.
