With this quick recap and quiz, you will be able to practice the Italian Indefinite Moods,<\/em> or Modi Indefiniti<\/em>. <\/i>I won’t go into details, since I wrote more structured blogs already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Italian infinito<\/a>, participio and gerundio<\/a> are modi indefiniti<\/em> because they do not provide any particular information about the subject or the timing of a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gerundio and Infinito<\/em> have “implicit subjects” and ignore totally the gender and number of a subject. In other words, they usually live together with another verb and they “borrow” the subject from it. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The gerundio leggendo<\/em> is invariabile. The two subjects, io<\/em> and noi<\/em>, don’t have any impact on leggendo,<\/em> which doesn’t change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Gerundio<\/em> just indicates how<\/strong><\/span> io<\/em> or noi<\/em> study Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We call it a gerundio di modo<\/em>. Again, review the related blog linked above for a complete explanation of the Italian Gerund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Participio<\/em> however, does change: Mario \u00e8 andato<\/strong><\/span>; Gli amici sono andati<\/strong><\/span>. You know that already, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Participio, Gerundio and Infinito<\/em> have two tenses each: semplice<\/em> and composto, <\/em>or presente<\/em> and passato<\/em> in old grammar books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The definition of presente<\/em> and passato<\/em> is convenient but misleading, since they really don’t have a particular place in time. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n I chose on purpose a main clause in the future (mi laver\u00f2). The first is an infinito semplice<\/em>, the second is an infinito composto<\/em>, which describes a complete action, not necessarily in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The participio<\/strong><\/span> is particularly easy. It’s not part of the quiz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The participio presente<\/em> tense is usually a noun or an adjective: presidente<\/strong><\/span>, cantante<\/strong><\/span>, comandante<\/strong><\/span> or divertente<\/strong><\/span>, interessante<\/strong><\/span>, bollente<\/strong><\/span>…The participio passato<\/em> is our beloved —ato, —uto, —ito (mangiato<\/strong><\/span>, bevuto<\/strong><\/span>, dormito<\/strong><\/span>) pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Again, presente and passato are just labels, they do not indicate a position in time of the participio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, remember that the gerundio<\/em> and infinito<\/em> are special, because they merge with pronouns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you want to know more, we can talk about it during our Skype class.
