Il pi\u00f9 ovvio \u00e8 &#8220;to be enough&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on how we use it, the Italian word &#8220;basta&#8221; can have different meanings. The most obvious is &#8220;to be enough&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Vuoi ancora un po&#8217; di vino o basta cos\u00ec?<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In questo caso, <em>basta<\/em> viene dal verbo impersonale <em>bastare<\/em>, di cui <a href=\"https:\/\/dante-learning.com\/eng\/2015\/07\/verbi-impersonali-guide-quiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abbiamo gi\u00e0 parlato in un altro blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Il vino <em>basta?<\/em>\u00a0\u00c8 abbastanza? Do you want some more wine? Is it enough? More examples with different tenses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Basteranno questi soldi per fare la spesa?<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Vorrei studiare di pi\u00f9 l&#8217;italiano ma il tempo non mi basta mai.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Per cuocere bene il pollo basterebbero ancora dieci minuti.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Un altro significato interessante \u00e8 come &#8220;no more&#8230;&#8221; o &#8220;enough with&#8230;&#8221; seguito da un verbo (stop doing this&#8230;) o da un oggetto (enough with this&#8230;).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Mario, basta con la Play Station, devi fare i compiti.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Enough, no more videogames.<\/p>\n<p>Some more examples. Listen carefully.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Basta fumare, ti fa male.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Lavori troppo. Devi avere il coraggio di dire &#8220;basta&#8221;.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Basta con questi film violenti. Che ne dici di una commedia?<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, if we have basta with a verb, we have something close to &#8220;stop +&#8230;ing&#8221;. Stop smoking, it&#8217;s bad for your health. Nothing more than&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Laura \u00e8 una collega\u00a0e basta. Non ci vediamo mai fuori dall&#8217;ufficio.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Laura is just a colleague, we never\u00a0hang out together.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3>Ho una fame da lupi. A pranzo ho mangiato una mela\u00a0e basta.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Avete dieci minuti per completare l&#8217;esame e poi basta.<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Domani mi sveglio presto. In questo caso, \u00e8 molto comune l&#8217;utilizzo del conguintivo perch\u00e9 esprimiamo una condizione e il verbo impersonale <em>bastare<\/em>\u00a0si connette a un soggetto differente nella seconda frase. Difficile? Non proprio. Guardate gli esempi.<\/p>\n<p>So, this one is a bit of advanced grammar. &#8220;Basta che&#8230;&#8221; triggers the subjunctive, il congiuntivo, because we have a condition (as long as&#8230;), we have a &#8220;che&#8221; used to connect two sentences and we have\u00a0two different subjects. Sounds difficult but actually it is not.
