The indicative is the mood of facts (“Pietro è in libreria”); the subjunctive is the mood of attitudes towards facts (“Penso che Pietro sia in libreria”).

The congiuntivo presente almost always appears in a dependent clause introduced by che. The main clause carries the trigger (a verb of opinion, an impersonal expression, a conjunction of doubt or purpose); the dependent clause carries the subjunctive verb.

Penso che Pietro abbia il romanzo di Pennacchi in libreria.
I think Pietro has the Pennacchi novel at the bookshop.

Spero che Caterina venga al matrimonio sabato pomeriggio.
I hope Caterina comes to the wedding on Saturday afternoon.

È necessario che voi confermiate la prenotazione entro venerdì sera.
It is necessary that you confirm the booking by Friday evening.

The four pillars of subjunctive use

Before drilling forms and triggers, four conditions usually need to hold for the subjunctive to be required. Miss one and the indicative or the infinitive will do the job instead.

Two clauses: a main clause + a dependent clause connected by che.

Two different subjects: subject of main clause ≠ subject of dependent clause.

A trigger in the main clause: a verb of opinion, desire, doubt, hope, fear; an impersonal expression; a noun of feeling; a specific conjunction.

The subjunctive in the dependent clause: never in the main clause (with very few exceptions for independent uses).

If the two subjects match, Italian skips the subjunctive and uses an infinitive instead: Pietro pensa di essere stanco (“Pietro thinks he is tired”) not Pietro pensa che lui sia stanco. We cover this same-subject trap in detail later.

Regular forms: -are, -ere, -ire

The congiuntivo presente has one set of endings per verb group. The first three singular persons (io, tu, lui/lei) share the same form, so the subject pronoun is often added for clarity. The noi form is identical to the indicative; the voi form changes.

Person

parlare (-are)

leggere (-ere)

dormire (-ire)

capire (-isc-)

che io

parli

legga

dorma

capisca

che tu

parli

legga

dorma

capisca

che lui/lei

parli

legga

dorma

capisca

che noi

parliamo

leggiamo

dormiamo

capiamo

che voi

parliate

leggiate

dormiate

capiate

che loro

parlino

leggano

dormano

capiscano

Two splits to remember. Read your sentences out loud.

A note on register and modern usage

Italian subjunctive use varies by region, age, and register. In careful writing and formal speech, the rules above hold without exceptions. In informal urban conversation, you will hear the indicative creep in after opinion verbs (penso che Pietro è stanco instead of sia), particularly in the Roman and southern dialects. The Accademia della Crusca documents this drift in its consultation pages without endorsing it as standard.

For B1 learners, the practical rule is simple: in writing, exams, and any context where you want to sound educated, always use the subjunctive after a trigger. In casual speech with friends, you can occasionally relax, but the safer default is always the subjunctive. Italians tend to forgive learners who over-use the subjunctive; they immediately spot learners who skip it where it belongs.

Test your understanding

The quiz below mixes congiuntivo presente forms and triggers, with traps on same-subject vs different-subject and on irregular roots.

Time limit: 0

Quiz-summary

                0 of 2 questions completed

Questions:

1

2

Information

–

You have already completed the quiz before. Penso che Pietro sia stanco (different subjects, penso = opinion trigger, sia = subjunctive). If any condition fails, you use indicative or infinitive instead.

What happens if the two subjects are the same?

Italian skips the italian present subjunctive and uses an infinitive instead. Penso di essere stanco (I think I’m tired), not Penso che io sia stanco. Same rule for spero (di + infinito), credo (di + infinito), voglio (+ infinito directly), ho paura (di + infinito), sono contento (di + infinito). This single rule fixes about 30% of B1 subjunctive errors made by learners.

Why are the io, tu, and lui/lei forms identical?

For historical reasons: Latin’s present subjunctive endings collapsed into a single Italian form (-i for -are, -a for -ere/-ire). Result: parli, parli, parli, parlino, three persons sharing one form. Native speakers add the subject pronoun whenever the context is ambiguous: penso che tu legga vs penso che lui legga. In writing the pronoun is almost always there for clarity.

What is the difference between che venga and che verrà?

Italian has no future subjunctive, so to refer to a future action after a trigger like spero che, voglio che, dubito che, you can use either the italian present subjunctive (che venga = that he comes/will come) or the future indicative (che verrà = that he will come). The present subjunctive is more idiomatic in formal writing and B1+ speech; the indicative future is acceptable in conversation. Spero che tu domani venga alla festa is the textbook choice; Spero che tu domani verrai alla festa is equally common in speech.

Are there irregular italian present subjunctive forms I really need to know?

Yes, about twelve high-frequency verbs. The ones you cannot avoid: essere (sia), avere (abbia), andare (vada), fare (faccia), stare (stia), dare (dia), sapere (sappia), volere (voglia), potere (possa), dovere (debba), venire (venga), dire (dica), uscire (esca), bere (beva). They all follow the regular ending pattern (-a for the three singular persons, -iamo, -iate, -ano) but with an irregular stem. Learn these by heart; the rest follow the regular -are/-ere/-ire patterns.

Can I avoid the subjunctive in modern spoken Italian?

Sometimes, but B1 learners should still master it. Spoken Italian has been slowly replacing the subjunctive with the indicative in informal contexts (penso che è bello instead of penso che sia bello), and the Crusca documents the trend without endorsing it. In writing, formal speech, exams, and any careful register, the italian present subjunctive remains mandatory. If you want to sound educated and natural, learn the forms and triggers; if you want to imitate casual urban speech, you can sometimes get away with the indicative, but you will be marked as a learner whenever a native ear is paying attention.

Related guides

Three guides that pair with this one, plus an institutional reference on subjunctive use.

Italian Subjunctive Tenses: All 4: the hub on the four subjunctive tenses and how to match them with the main clause.

Italian Congiuntivo vs Condizionale: the contrast post on when to pick subjunctive vs conditional.

Italian -ché Conjunctions: Affinché, Purché, Benché: the subjunctive-triggering connectors in the -ché family.

Accademia della Crusca: Uso del congiuntivo: institutional note on subjunctive use in modern Italian.

🔍 In short.
