The characters of the following\u00a0very short story, made of two sentences, are you and your friend Laura. She comes to see you<\/em> and you know that.<\/em> We just have two actions: the fact that you know (your main clause) and the fact she’s coming (subordinate clause).<\/p>\n

The relative position in time of these two actions can change\u00a0the meaning of the story.\u00a0You knew it in the past, you know it now or\u00a0you will know it later (main clause); she\u00a0comes before, at the same time or\u00a0after you know it (subordinate clause).<\/p>\n

These are all simple and valid examples. You have other options of course.<\/p>\n

It depends on the sequence of the events you want to describe. Mind, the sequence must<\/em> be logical. I can’t say for example Seppi che Laura \u00e8 arrivata<\/em>. The passato remoto<\/em>\u00a0(remote past) can’t happen\u00a0after a passato prossimo\u00a0<\/em>(near past). In this case, the trapassato prossimo, “the past of the past”<\/a><\/em> is the correct\u00a0option. Seppi che Laura era arrivata<\/em>. In the same spirit, If I\u00a0knew that Laura would come later, I must use the condizionale\u00a0composto “the future in the past”<\/a>. Ho saputo che Laura sarebbe arrivata<\/span>. <\/em>The past progressive<\/em> form<\/em><\/a> is also possible (Laura stava arrivando)<\/p>\n
