They are still italian verbs followed by a; the difference is only that an object person sits between the main verb and <em>a<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"advsdi\">A or di: is there a rule?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, no clean rule predicts the preposition from the meaning alone. <em>Cominciare<\/em> takes <em>a<\/em>, <em>finire<\/em> takes <em>di<\/em>, yet both are about phases of an action. The modal verbs <em>dovere, potere, volere<\/em> and <em>sapere<\/em> (= know how to) take the bare infinitive, no preposition: <em>devo partire<\/em>, <em>posso entrare<\/em>, <em>voglio restare<\/em>, <em>so guidare<\/em>. Treat them as fixed members of the italian verbs followed by a, learned whole rather than derived.
