Get them right and your sentences land clean; get them wrong and a native listener will pause, even when every other word is correct. This guide walks through each one in plain English, with Italian prepositions for every job, with dozens of real examples drawn from classroom usage, the traps Italian prepositions English speakers hit first, and an Italian prepositions cheat sheet you can keep open while you write.

What Italian prepositions actually do

A preposition sits in front of a noun, a pronoun, or an infinitive verb, and tells you how that word relates to the rest of the sentence. In Italian the job is the same as in English, but the choices rarely line up one to one. Parlo di Mario is “I talk about Mario” (the topic). Parlo con Mario is “I talk to Mario” (the companion). Parlo a Mario is “I am speaking to Mario” (the addressee). Same verb, three different Italian prepositions, three different meanings. For a formal definition in Italian, see the Treccani entry on preposizioni.

The eight simple Italian prepositions are di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra/fra. They are short, they are frequent, and five of them (di, a, da, in, su) fuse with the definite article into a single word: del, alla, dagli, negli, sulle. You will meet these prepositions in every sentence you read, so the sooner you get a feel for each one, the faster the rest of your Italian will move. Each preposition covers a whole family of relations: time, place, origin, manner, cause, quality, quantity, and many more. The lists below give you three or four concrete sentences for every job each word does.

🔍 Quick lens. Prepositions do not translate, they cluster. Memorise them inside short phrases you will reuse: a Padova, in Italia, da mio fratello, di mattina, con calma, su misura, per sempre, tra un’ora. The phrase carries the rule; the rule alone will slip.

DI: of, from, about, made of

Among the Italian prepositions, di is the most versatile of all. It loosely matches English “of” when you link two nouns, but it also covers origin, topic, material, time of day, comparison, age, cause, quality, quantity, abundance, and a handful of smaller relations. Before a word starting with a vowel it often shortens to d’: d’oro, d’estate, d’accordo. Below, Italian prepositions example sentences for each job this little word does.

Time of day (repeated, habitual): Lucia preferisce studiare di sera, piuttosto che di mattina.
Lucia prefers to study in the evening, rather than in the morning.

Specification (linking two nouns): Il giro del mondo in 80 giorni è un romanzo straordinario.
Around the World in 80 Days is a wonderful novel.

Belonging: la macchina di Luca, il cane della vicina, i libri dei miei nonni.
Luca’s car, the neighbour’s dog, my grandparents’ books.

Age: In Italia si va in pensione all’età di 65 anni. Il mio vicino di casa è un uomo di circa trent’anni.
In Italy people retire at 65. When the noun is generic and uncountable, di stays bare, with no article. Before a word starting with a vowel, especially a stressed a, it often gains a d: ad Anna, ad agosto. This d eufonica is optional but very common in writing. Thirteen typical Italian prepositions jobs, with examples:

Place, city: Per il prossimo fine-settimana andrò a Capri. If you want to stress the destination or the end point, use fino a: Prendo il taxi fino alla stazione, I take the taxi as far as the station. And remember the fixed duo a piedi (on foot), which does not take in like the other means of transport.

DA: from, since, at someone’s place

Of the Italian prepositions, da is the one that catches English speakers off guard most often. It points at an origin in space, a starting point in time, the place where somebody lives or works (like French chez), the purpose an object is made for, the agent in a passive sentence, a quality, a quantity, a distance, a cause, and a price estimate. Twelve Italian prepositions jobs, each with example sentences you can rehearse out loud.

Motion from or to somebody’s place: Oggi Carla è agitata, perché deve andare dal dentista. In everyday talk, di wins, and this is one of the nicer overlaps among Italian prepositions.

PER: for, through, in order to

Of the Italian prepositions, per stretches over several English prepositions: “for”, “through”, “by”, “in order to”, even “during”. Some verbs ask for one like a, some ask for di, and some take the infinitive directly. There is no shortcut: every verb carries its Italian preposition in the dictionary, and you learn them in chunks. Here is a practical grouping, with examples you can say out loud today.

Verbs with a (beginning, motion, learning, intention): cominciare a, iniziare a, mettersi a, andare a, venire a, tornare a, imparare a, insegnare a, riuscire a, continuare a, provare a, invitare a, aiutare a, costringere a, obbligare a, abituarsi a, decidersi a, prepararsi a.
Comincio a capire. Vado a studiare. Sto imparando a cucinare. Insegno ai miei figli a leggere.
I am beginning to understand. I am going to study. I am learning to cook. I teach my children to read.

Verbs with di (thought, opinion, saying, end of action): pensare di, credere di, decidere di, finire di, smettere di, cessare di, cercare di, ricordarsi di, dimenticare di, sperare di, promettere di, accettare di, rifiutare di, avere paura di, avere bisogno di, avere voglia di, consigliare di, suggerire di.
Penso di partire domani. Ho finito di leggere il libro. Ho smesso di fumare. Ricordati di chiudere la porta. Ti consiglio di studiare di più.
I am thinking of leaving tomorrow. I have finished reading the book. I have stopped smoking. Remember to close the door. I advise you to study more.

Modal and a few others with no preposition: dovere, potere, volere, sapere (when it means “know how to”), preferire, amare, desiderare, osare, gradire, lasciare, sentire, vedere, fare.
Devo partire. Posso entrare? Voglio mangiare. So nuotare. Preferisco tacere. Ho sentito qualcuno bussare alla porta.
I must leave. May I come in? I want to eat. I know how to swim. I prefer to stay silent. I heard someone knocking at the door.

Verbs with da (something to be done, passive flavour): avere da, esserci da, dare da.
Ho molto lavoro da fare. C’è da preparare la cena. Dammi qualcosa da bere. Non c’è niente da mangiare in frigo.
I have a lot of work to do. The dinner needs to be prepared. Give me something to drink. There is nothing to eat in the fridge.

Verbs of motion + per + infinitive (purpose): andare per, venire per, uscire per, partire per, passare per.
Sono andato in libreria per comprare un dizionario. Esco un attimo per fare la spesa. Sono passato da te per vederti.
I went to the bookshop to buy a dictionary. I am stepping out for a moment to do the shopping. I dropped by your place to see you.

The cleanest way to internalise these Italian prepositions is to read short sentences aloud every day and copy the structure verbatim. You will start to feel which preposition fits before you can explain why. For a deeper reference on pronouns that attach to these infinitives, see the combined pronouns guide.

Common mistakes English speakers make with Italian prepositions

A short list of the slips that hit almost every learner in the first six months. With the present tense and a time expression, you need da, not per: abito a Bologna da cinque anni.

Do not say ho telefonato Marta. Italian prepositions need a for the indirect object: ho telefonato a Marta.

Do not say penso a partire when you mean “I’m thinking of leaving”. The verb pensare takes di with an infinitive: penso di partire. Pensare a exists too, but with a noun: penso a mia madre.

Do not say vado in dottore. With a person’s place you need da: vado dal dottore, dal dentista, da mio fratello.

Do not repeat the preposition inside an English-style phrasal verb. Italian keeps them tight: cerco il libro, not cerco per il libro. Same with ascolto la musica, not ascolto a la musica.

Do not confuse a + city with in + country: a Firenze in Toscana in Italia means “in Florence, in Tuscany, in Italy”. The three preposition choices are layered like nested boxes.

Do not say fra un ora without the apostrophe. Italian elides the article before a vowel: fra un’ora (feminine ora). Same trap: nell’albergo, all’aeroporto, dell’uomo.

Dialog: Elena and Jake plan a trip to Puglia

Elena lives in Bologna, Jake is her cousin visiting from Dublin. Da describes the purpose or destination of the noun: orologio da polso is a watch for the wrist, scarpe da corsa are shoes for running, abbigliamento da lavoro is clothing meant for work. The line is thin, and the safest Italian prepositions habit is to memorise the whole phrase.

Why is it a Roma but in Italia?

Italian uses a with points on the map (cities, small towns, small islands): a Roma, a Bologna, a Capri. It uses in with areas that have borders (countries, regions, continents, large islands): in Italia, in Toscana, in Sardegna, in Europa. A few large islands take a (a Cuba, a Malta) because they do not use the definite article; the rest follow the city rule.

Is it andare al cinema or andare in cinema?

Andare al cinema. Public places traditionally treated as specific venues (the cinema, the theatre, the market, the supermarket, the office, the bathroom) take a with the article: al cinema, al teatro, al mercato, al supermercato, in ufficio, in bagno. Two of them flip to in without article (in ufficio, in bagno). These do not follow a tidy rule, they travel in fixed phrases you pick up one at a time.

How do I translate I have lived in Italy for five years with da or per?

Use da with the present tense: vivo in Italia da cinque anni. Italian keeps the verb in the present because the action is still going on. Per (ho vissuto in Italia per cinque anni) closes the block of time and means that the living is over. If you are still there, it is da; if you left, it is per with the passato prossimo.

Do I say vado in macchina or vado con la macchina?

Both are correct. In macchina is the default way of saying you go somewhere by car as a generic means of transport, just like in treno, in autobus, in bicicletta. Con la macchina stresses the specific car or opposes it to another option (oggi vado con la macchina di mio fratello, or con la macchina non con l’autobus). The same split applies to most vehicles.

Why do we say dal dottore and not al dottore?

Italian uses da with a person or somebody’s workplace, not a: vado dal dottore, dal dentista, dal panettiere, dalla mia amica. The preposition signals motion toward the person or toward the place where that person is. It matches French chez. Al dottore is not wrong in every context, but it sounds off for the everyday I’m going to the doctor’s.

When do I use a, di, or nothing before an infinitive?

It depends on the main verb. Verbs of beginning, motion, and intention take a (cominciare a, andare a, imparare a, riuscire a). Verbs of thinking, deciding, finishing take di (pensare di, decidere di, finire di, sperare di). Modal verbs (dovere, potere, volere) and a short list of others (preferire, amare, desiderare, sapere fare qualcosa) take the infinitive with no preposition. The only real shortcut is to learn each verb together with its preposition.

Related guides

Now that Italian prepositions make sense, keep going with the guides below.

These five guides pair well with the topic of Italian prepositions.
