“Ce l’hai con me?” Italian idioms with pronouns – Audio examples

A list of italian idioms with pronouns (verbi pronominali)

Level = intermediate.

Italians use verbs and pronouns to create very colorful and useful idioms. This is something you really need to get used to if you want to be fluent. I’m going to teach you some important idioms after a brief explenation and some examples.

Let’s take for example the verb…

FARE, (to do/to make)

  • Di solito faccio colazione alle 7 di mattina.

If we add a pronoun and an adjective to the verb, in some cases we can obtain an idiom

FARE + LA = FARLA FRANCA –> to get away with it.

  • I ladri non sono stati arrestati e sono riusciti a farla franca.

If we add two pronouns we can obtain another idiom

FARE + CI + LA = FARCELA –> to succeed / to make it

  • Le borse della spesa sono troppo pesanti, non ce la faccio.

Technically, we are talking about verbi pronominali, pronominal verbs. It doesn’t matter if you don’t remember this term. Most italians don’t and personally I don’t focus too much on definitions. Let’s see some examples.

Try to understand the meaning of the sentences. Translations often times do not reflect all the nuances of conversational Italian, so if you have a better translation in English, feel free to add it to the comments.
