The most important relative pronouns in Italian are Che, Cui, Quale.

Let’s practice with a quiz and audio examples

Che, Cui and Quale are the most common Italian relative pronouns (pronomi relativi). Other important words, such as chi, quanto, chiunque, ovunque (pronomi misti) can occasionally work as relative pronouns, but they are not part of today’s brief review and quiz.

I guess the difference between che and chi for some of you is unclear. Try the quiz and double check your results, in case you have doubts.

Che

• L’uomo che sta camminando è mio fratello.
• La donna che hai conosciuto si chiama Laura.
• I ragazzi che giocano in cortile fanno rumore.
• Le donne che abbiamo salutato, sono mie colleghe.

As we can see, CHE

• never changes.
• it introduces a subject (l’uomo che sta camminando…).
• or an object (la donna che (tu) hai conosciuto…).
• doesn’t need articles (il, la, i, le) except for the following rare case:

Oggi non piove, il che significa che possiamo andare al mare.

il che… = e questo…

Cui

• La casa in cui vivo è troppo piccola.
• Non capisco il motivo per cui ti arrabbi.
• Ricordi la strada da cui siamo venuti?
• Non ho sentito le notizie di cui state parlando.

In these examples, CUI

• never changes
• always goes with a preposition (di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra/fra).
• doesn’t need an article (il, la, i, le) except for the following case:

Questo è l’attore il cui film mi era piaciuto tanto.

il cui = il film dell’attore… (whose)

Quale / Quali

• La casa nella quale vivo è troppo piccola.
• Non capisco il motivo per il quale ti arrabbi.
• Ricordi la strada dalla quale siamo venuti?
• Non ho sentito le notizie delle quali state parlando.

I picked exactly the same sentences of CUI because they are interchangeable with quale/quali. However…

• Quale becomes Quali when plural.
• Always need a preposition combined with an article.
• There are rare cases when we say il, la quale / i, le quali without preposition, like this one:

Questa ragazza, la quale vive a Milano, è un’amica.

la quale = che (almost exclusively in formal speech or written)
